I've found it's often much more uncomfortable to awkwardly sit in silence than it is to attempt to make conversation.

Any formal situation used to cripple me. Unstructured conversation was ok and I was always good one on one. But shops and stuff, anything formal like that destroyed me. It can still get to me sometimes.

As I got better and better at being insincere and offering a false front to the world the less good I got at one on one situations. That was the pay off for me

I like it when a formal situation wobbles, like if something funny happens and you all laugh. The structure cracks a bit.

One of my favourite things in sport is when something happens and the competition melts away for a moment, Messi and Ronaldo laughing between themselves.

I mean, it seems safe to assume everyone here is a bit shy deep down even if they've found successfully ways to deal with it over the years. The techniques for overcoming it are interesting in themselves
