I'm Increasingly Resistant to New Things

i'm only 26 and up until now getting older has been the sense of youth culture moving in different directions along familiar parametres where you still understand the units of expression but happen to move on another level of intensity. but for the first time ever i'm now feeling more of a categorical shift. a total rift of understanding. not relatives in the same absolute but a different absolute altogether. think it was scrolling through tiktok for the first time that did it

Wait until you hit 42. A tear in the sky itself opens, so you try and drag the laziest god out and it roundhouses you into your 50’s. 42-50 years of age are pure hallucination.

I thought as I got older I'd get depressed at not being into youth culture anymore, but I've found it isn't an issue because (predictably) it doesn't interest or resonate with me anyway.

I get that every generation sneers when seeing their own ways superceded as de facto youth culture but hoenstly it's just a complete wasteland now, it has to be way worse than any direction my generation or those before ever took

I think a lot of it's stupid, but I'm supposed to. It's their thing. I remember people thinking the stuff I was into was stupid too, and it was.

I fear TikTok. The modes of expression. How quickly it’s made certain behaviours normal. All the wacky international humour from good looking overconfident kids. Really unsettling
they've really had to double down on the pre-emptive defense tactice of labelling every criticism against them as out of touch. They dared to explicitise this move with the "ok boomer" thing.

humans inherently just want to be entertained. in the past, comparatively, there were limited ways to do that, but social media makes it possible for anyone anywhere to just blob out and watch wacky international humor from good looking overconfident kids all day long.

older folk see it as a dumbing down, young'uns see it as a great adventure. doubt the two sides will ever come to agreement.

probably, but perhaps it would also be a bit boring for them and everyone else if they weren't criticized by elders. it's that galvanizing touch we must bestow as a rite of passage.

I'm not really resistant to new things so much as resigned to the fact that I've fallen too far behind now. I know I'll never catch up, not without an effort that I will never be bothered to make. I never got on twitter, never been on Spotify, never torrented a film, hardly ever listened to a podcast and if in being honest Im not entirely sure how to do it.

It's never gonna happen. I'm stuck in may be 2005 and there's no way out without a massive effort

The facebook self made me uncomfortable, the twitter template tone even moreso . But tiktok videos take pre packaged expression and fame hunger a bit further again. the machine does a lot more of the thinking for you with tik tok and everyone is playing for huge international audiences rather than friends or peers - so international craic. it is fun and addictive to flick through but also sinister and should be banned definitely
