and don't worry about it, I am frequently also guilty of intermittent correspondence

Peter Pomerantsev is the same guy we were talking about in some other thread recently, right? when I mentioned Alexei Yurchak

in terms of our lives and recent memory, that's true

in the greater course of human history, not so much

the Black Death was a truly cataclysmic event orders of magnitude worse

life went on - taxes were wrangled over and collected, crops were sowed and harvested, wars continued being fought

it certainly had massive short-term and longer-term effects but life went on

You ever Norman Cohn? Been reaching for my copy of In Pursuit of the Millennium to help understand the current moment.

Oh and this is a fab piece on Qanon if you've not seen it - https://mssv.net/2020/08/02/what-args-can-teach-us-about-qanon/

one quick sketch of how paranoia operates and illuminates.

you-
X is my friend.

voice in your head-
oh, is he. you dont feel he maybe looks down on us?

you-
i guess he does. we're not socially sophisticated enough are we? that's why we don't get introduced to his other friends or go out in public

voice in your head-
you look down on him too dont you. you think hes a simpleton

you-
yes, i do. that's true

this is about me isn't it!!?

Yep yep. His books are kinda very much a light read but have a wealth of detail. He seems pointedly non-academic.

yeah he's great

the similarly named Norman Cantor's In the Wake of the Plague is also of obvious relevance

and I'm about 1/3 into Vol II of Jonathan Sumption's 100 Years War History, which begins in 1349 just as the plague hits

I was amazed, given how Year Zero apocalypse we think of the Black Death, the extent to which life (and war) just went on

which you shouldn't be I guess, what else are people going to do, but you're not expecting it to be the case

“Look at all these cunts raking it in while we‘re forced to sit in our own shit”

Heard this dozens of times with clients in the last few months, as a summary. I mean they’re not wrong for the most part.

yes, you agree with them. that's what your saying too. that's what we all think. part of what i want to do is to stop shifting this stuff onto other people. qanon. my damaged clients. the alt right. david icke. and acknowledge that it is part of us, one of the instruments and methods we use to make sense of our world.

how much weight we give to these inutitions and forebodings varies, and how we modulate its findings by balancing them against eg received opinion, or the rational intellect etc varies. but its a probe we all send out and gather information from.

often a revelation, lets say your wife is cheating on you, is preceded by these forebodings, a nagging sense of it, clues have been adding up, but havent quite crossed the threshold of proof yet. maybe it hasnt even become consciously evidence yet. it starts as 'paranoia' and ends in revelation.

or maybe your boss is going to let you go. hes not given you any long run on jobs, hes not keeping you late anymore. you dont seem to be part of long term plans for the firm. no 'proof' as of yet, but enough material for an hunch and for paranoia to go to work on

what world might The Archons wish to build in the wake of corona we ask ourselves, guided in that dark space of uncertainty by our 'paranoia'

Yeah, I guess we can all feel the pull back to normality in our current circs, no matter how dangerous it might be. I'd imagine it to be much the same, especially given the more precarious state of life then. No hiding out with Netflix and a fridge freezer for 2 months for those guys.

usually we wont get the proof until the event occurs. Othello kills his wife. the plot is revealed. too late.

again, i just want to draw this important distinction. we are taking responsibility for our own paranoia and our own speculative groping outward feeling intelligence. not talking about popular comic series like q-anon or other paranoia-franchises.

then you should've made a thread about owning our own paranoia instead of trying of trying to shoehorn it in with corona conspiracism
