Trilliam Explains House

Having a somewhat low barrier to entry, with flexible quality control on production and a willingness to run tracks that contain something special even if they’re not all the way there yet, is what Sean sees as a central ingredient for a mass musical movement, time and again. “It’s the only way, it works good and bad… How else you gonna do it, how else you gonna jump on it?"

i didn't really hear any experimental tendancies at the time which could have been developed on but to be fair i was not digging through house. The Radford shows at the time didn't appeal to me. think there was one tune on an arun vybe show which was like some future electrobass mutation but obviously one tune doesn't make a whole trendancy for me.

true but look at how the article comes across a bit. guilty liberal-y from the guy interviewing him. tbf though, i appreciate that this guy at least took the time to profile something that got utterly maligned by yer dj mags, mixmags and joy orbison types. I'm p jaded with dance music industry though. The same beat on and on and on no disruption, no rods plunged into the floor.

Edit: i don't think i should necessarily tarnish the guy with the guilty liberal brush after re-reading the article. I just get a bit miphed at the way people want to reform the industry when really it just needs to be ripped up and refounded.

yeah. i suppose so. i mean i do feel like a bit (hurt isn't the word) but like there was this scene with a type of crowd who were the people i grew up with in secondary school/sixth form and then suddenly i was making a detour into electro and fucked up techno, some of the evangelism from blackdown and the like did feel like a bit of a callout, like why aren't you with yer lot.

I felt abandoned by the continuum to an extent and i guess it still makes me frustrated in some ways.

I know enough about house to play like 3-4 dj sets but I'd never say I'm a house head, in the 1990s-2000s mould.

like the getting into experimental music, noise and stuff, it was something i had to do because i felt like stuff was evolving in a direction which was more about friday/saturday night, and i was already bored of like spending £100 at a club and not having such a rewarding time.

I suppose my great weakness is I get bored very quickly with anything that is too joyful. I need to be in the right state of mind for it, spiritually amenable, preferably summertime and in high spirits.

but then someone could quite convincingly argue that the new jungle and the new techno-y stuff I'm into isn't really doing anything new. and they'd be absolutely right. I just like a certain way of sounds relating to each other in certain contexts. I'm not afraid to admit that, band listeners do that all the time. if you don't look at innovation dialectically and always fetishise it at all costs you just become a neoliberal technocrat. i know where the major innovations are and have been, and i can get into their depths. it's a bit of an internet wormhole approach but it works for me.

Apologies for some inexplicable reason I was feeling a bit crankish earlier on. I have no idea what caused it but i probably came across as a bit cunty.

Great read, really enjoyed that. Trilliam is indeed a legend.

Was feeling nostalgic a while back and went to find some of my old favourite sets by Majesty, Aaron Vybe and Jay Power etc but was disappointed to see they'd all disappeared off soundcloud

We should give @continuum a nod for starting the thread too (and the jackin one as well)

Quite interesting reading back the first few pages

Kinda instructive that whilst hard drive space is cheaper than ever (one of the few things!) people have gotten worse at archiving. people used to be evangelists about that. There didn't seem to be the same evangelism with deep tech, it seemed more culturally than musically interesting. which isn't invalid but means that stuff has probably slipped through the cracks now.
