Exiting Reality

The long-term effort, for me at least, would be attempting to shift your attention paradigm such that more substantial things register to you as fun. So in my case, certain lectures hold my attention much more than others, if even for arbitrary reasons.

This effort would be in the interest of combatting feelings of unproductiveness and depression, the price being some degree of cognitive strain or, at the extremity, cognitive exhaustion/neurasthenia (?).

edit: maybe "fun" isn't a good word for it. "Attention-holding" is what I mean.

well "having fun" and "having you're attention held" are both ways of saying "not bored"

Yeah thats pretty much it.

But I also think there are degrees of intensity, in terms of how much attention you're paying, degrees of information retention. How well is the information being integrated into your intuition, etc.

If you can do brief emotional-intellectual exercises in the spirit of "why is this topic important to me?" you may be able to bolster the attention you give it, at least for a while. If successful, you can breeze through a whole technical lecture, pausing to look things up, without it being a drag. Personally, its rather satisfying.

So "having fun" could mean not being bored, but it doesn't necessarily entail the robust retention of information, which is what I think is an important thing to figure out how to achieve.

I think this would be one way to spin the whole internet-draining-my-attention thing into a distinct and potentially limitless positive.

Whole university course lectures are on youtube for free, and there is no insurmountable obstacle preventing the average internet user from guiding their own education. The primary obstacle is the widespread attention deficit so may of us seem/claim to be suffering from. Difficult, but not insurmountable.

One formulation of the task at hand is to engineer a religion that can operate on a global and (neo)liberal stage. A religion that manages to channel our negative energy away from one another. Granted, my understanding of such things is still minuscule and piecemeal compared to where one ought to be, so any map I draw out can at most be a sorry analog of a sufficient map.

An effective religion is like a vast grid of gushing oil pumps, with psychic energy being robustly and ideologically harvested. These currents of energy, these alignments, usually prove either elusive or unwieldy to those looking to orchestrate them. Trump's done a decent job, maybe due in part to the influence of the likes of Bannon, but its still haphazard and mediocre compared to the level I have in mind: the level that may secure at least part of the trajectory to utopia, which would be the human capacity of the ends in sight.

But the zealous reality is a visceral and sublime and intoxicating reality, a reality that may prove difficult to weave in and out of, a reality in which one may have special difficulty in separating the map from the territory.

This was and might still be music fandom for me. If you can will it, deliberately alter the way you expose yourself to pieces of music, you can make major changes to the preferences once thought to be immutable aspects of the self. And its a visceral and base change, you feel it in your gut, not just a heady 'appreciation.' Music was very formative for me in that way, it showed me the self as a laboratory or switchboard, and that experiences can be reality modulators. used, not consumed
