How comfortable would you be throwing away a book you didn't pay for?

Yeah I was actually gonna say that - just leave them on a table or something in the library. I would imagine whoever ends up clearing them off would be in a better position to find a home for them. Perhaps the library has some kind of outlet/program for donations that only library-workers can access.

I've got a load of books to chuck atm and I'm gonna pick a few and give em to the guy in the local head shop (he's got a shelf of conspiracy theory, cinema, philosophy etc) and the rest are going to oxfam. I've checked and they will still take donations off the street.

John is right about librarians having enough work but other people might like your random shit left on the table who knows.

My mum taught me a deep respect of books she always used to say, never throw a book or even drop it on the floor, so I do have a problem with binning them, but it's getting to that point now isn't it. So much info, we need to get rid of some

I think books are still a very sophisticated and formidable medium/format. Incredible really that they've not changed a great deal in over 500 years.

And recent research has shown that most readers require or prefer paper if they are reading more than a chapter.

Ebook sales grew exponentially when the format first turned up, but have now tailed off and stagnated

pre-corona, it was common for people here to leave a box full on books out front of their house or building with a "free" sign. rather do that than toss them in the trash.

good point. books have a much better "ui" than any digital format. I even print out papers so that I dont have to read them on my laptop or phone.

Yes this is way more common than people think it is. Paper as a carrier for text and especially for images has not really been eclipsed. It's like vinyl for music but way more persistent

Nah, just carefully open it somewhere in the middle, do a really detailed biro drawing of a big spunking cock across two pages, then innocently hand it in to a charity shop. Are they going to check every page for obscene vandalism before reselling it to some hapless chump? Are they fuck!

Why would you do that? It's an assault to the qualitative integrity of the spunking cock. They should be reserved for ballot papers mr goody two shoes. Even the uncouth must be presented in such a way that its uncouth nature is accentuated.

I just keep telling myself they're all for a makeshift library once society collapses.

when society collapses you'll be dead, you're too bourgeois and religious, you will never be able to improvise, too heartfelt and literary, not enough spontaneous self-generating algorithms in yer head. everything has to be planned in advance for an event horizon, which is the diametric opposite to societal collapse.

Ha! Trust you to object ideologically to the profanation of the spunking cock.
