What was it like? I've never eaten an animal it sounds intense
Was alright I think... can't really remember to be honest. I think they were battered or something. Probably in a curry. But they're not unpleasant in themselves, if you have them with something tasty it will be good.

Technically I was brought up to like the French, as they were also long-running enemies of the English. But I'm not all that keen.

Never produced any decent music. Their big dish is raw egg yolk mushed about in raw ground beef. What have they given us? De Sade, Houllebecq, Space? Serge Gainsbourg is just the French Jimmy Savile.

A mate from Yorkshire who was far more handsome than me dated a French chick. One night in Soho, we were discussing it and he said "Be honest, what do you think of when you think of French girls? I mean, I'm doing it, you're not, so what do you think they're like?" I said "Hairy?" and he went all quiet and then said "Yeah, very".

It's strange to think that French was the official language of England for a few hundred years, but it never got the purchase cos the elites still used Latin for the most important official stuff and there was too much animosity between the lower classes speaking underground old English and their Norman overlords. Henry 7th officially banned its use but that was years down the line.

‘A film can be feminist?’ They don’t know this concept. They don’t read the book. They don’t even know about the fact that ‘male gaze’ exists. You can tell it’s a country where there’s a lot of sexism, and a strong culture of patriarchy.”

Is this true? Is France uniquely regressive and patriarchal in Europe?

I've been thinking a lot about Serge and Birkin. I remember when I read the Sartre/Beauvoir bio, it was shocking how willing these beautiful Parisian women were to sleep with Jean-Paul, despite his deformities. His literary reputation was really sexual, he was like the Rolling Stones or something in France. I hear this is how they treat philosophers and literary types in general lots of adoration. Older men too they're always older and ugly but they have a "beautiful mind" the women really swoon for them. They have a big rotating cast of girlfriends, they feel no obligation to "go steady" these guys.

Is this to be admired or despised? I can't tell what it says about the French people. Do the women know what they want? Are the French all intellectual poseurs?

Big division here. Corpsey despises them. Woops idolises them. This will set off some tensions.

I hate the French instinctively, but every French person I've actually met IRL has been lovely.

I have always been scared of going to Paris cos my parents went back in the 70s or something and the French were apparently all rude to them. But I do really want to go there at some point, for the art and all that.

When I say I hate them btw I don't mean I want to exterminate them, it's just one of my many inherited English prejudices.

I read somewhere that before WW1 happened, nobody would have expected the English and French to be allies against Germany. Cos the English hated the French and liked the Germans.

Obviously the English hatred of the French has a strong element of jealousy to it. We think of them as suave, sophisticated, intellectual, sexy, uninhibited. They're the Chad France.

Chads aren't very intellectual, but yeah, apart from that.

My finest paraplegic wino blackout impressions have been in France. Discretely too, unlike the typical English booze hound, saving the worst for trying to get in sleeping bags and beds while sparing their gorgeous urban and rural palisades from descending into vomitoriums and public urine streams

Beast of Burden
The Whiggish strain of the English has always been hopelessly Francophile, and there is also a conservative French strain that has always admired the Anglo-Saxons.
