Never actually heard this recording before. Was only uploaded a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully the estate don't have it pulled. Unbelievable piece of music.

yeah it's the best thing he ever did, or got onto record anyway

it's one of those great what-ifs, if he had lived how would he have pursued this kind of Funkdelic meets Black Sabbath meets electric Miles direction

given especially that he was creating the vocabulary for all of those things to exist, rather than following in their wake like everyone else

I was looking for this version a while go, my favorite hendrix by a long way, actually I think its the only song of his I can still listen to. I was actually looking for it the other day and specifically the version from the band of gypsys

as a general rule his live recordings - or bits of them - are much better than studio albums

he deserves all the credit he gets for revolutionizing what the electric guitar was but he never made a truly good LP

"Stone Free" at the Royal Albert Hall is also pretty good, not quite as fwd as "Machine Gun" but ultimate power trio freakout, heavy af for '69

if this is just a general Hendrix thread

when you get into late 60s-early 70s hard rock/heavy psych it's kind of amazing how totally he's the default model for guitar players

there's not really a true innovation away from him until the twin-guitar attack of Thin Lizzy and early Judas Priest

isn't this the version off "Band of Gypsys"? I vaguely remember that spoken intro.
Not sure. Apparently the version on Band of Gypsys is the third night and, according to someone in the comments, this one's the second? The Wiki says there are at least four versions,
"Two additional performances of the song appear on the expanded Band of Gypsys' album Live at the Fillmore East released in 1999. A fourth is included on Machine Gun: The Fillmore East First Show (2016)."

This is the version on my copy of Band of Gypsies.

I almost mentioned Hendrix in suspended reasons going it alone thread, bucking the trend- he ditched the studio guys (though mitch mitchell is great) and looked like he was primed to make some of his best music.

his v famous Woodstock rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner is another key touchstone

especially in the middle where it veers into full-on feedback noise freakout

It's the same as the vid I posted above which got released as a DVD but the sound quality is much better on the Youtube upload and hasn't been cut down.

How do people feel about Randy Hansen? I don't like tribute acts and impersonators, but I have to give him some credit. He's pretty good at it.

Imagine Hendrix replacing the guitarist here
idk if you saw my comments on it in the Miles thread couple weeks ago

the Lucas/Cosey duo on Agharta and Pangaea is basically Hendrix split into two people (Lucas on rhythm, Cosey on lead)

playing with all kinds of tunings and through all kinds of fx

and yeah that's the what-if - imagine Hendrix doing that and he's Hendrix with all the virtuosity married to innovation that that implies

Wishbone Ash deserve a mention on dual lead attack, I feel

he's fine at what he does but I have zero interest in it

there are a bunch of Jimi clones the way Prince had clones

Randy Holden (who also did some time in Blue Cheer, tho not on the truly important LPs i.e. the first 2) is one of the better ones
