watching this, it makes me think that one of the key differences between grime and drill is that grime is still about the audio kit. like that's primary still. studio. whereas drill is devoid of that. it's just a visual thing really. or the visual is primary.

just the studio gear, like i mean the whole 'in the studio with...' or behind the scenes DVD as a hype product. does it exist with drill? it's so easy to see the finished video now, with drill.

That's because there were still prominent producers and DJs in grime I guess? Once everything is reduced down to the pure YouTube vessel then the producers become irrelevant

We did also have the middle stage between the two where you still had mixtapes and hosting, people like big ryde/mykal million still had radio shows but weren't mixing

Yeah youtube is the medium of the message now, above all else.

It's weird that, that you've got soundcloud and mixcloud which are made for audio, but the preference is youtube.

I suppose it's the simple thing of the general public knowing what youtube is, it's far more of a currency than the others, they are more specialised.

And then also the affordance of the extra, the visuals. Its the equivalent of the gatefold album or whatever.

But this is what I mean with drill, the visual seems to come before the auditory

Well youtube allows you to demonstrate your vicinity too. These drill videos are ultimately the equivalent of those spiders that make elaborate nests to impress female spiders but with the added appeal of wearing balaclavas

This has maybe changed a bit with Fumez's Plugged In series, although I think the motivation for that is less about showing the "audio kit" than drawing attention away from reaction vids with the way it cuts to Fumez's reactions (incidentally, I often think he looks disappointed/underwhelmed rather than impressed). One strange thing about UK drill is the profile of the studio engineers - a kind of personification of the "audio kit", I guess - through things like Plugged In and the audio tags ("Ay Tweeko mixed this y'know, it sounds cooold...") - I can't think of any other genres that do this. Some of these engineers have better recognition than a lot of producers. Not sure if it's a consequence of this, but for some tracks you see a bunch of people in the YouTube comments slagging off the mixdown.

that is certainly a different sort of drill video and kinda interesting.... that bluish 'flicker' or wipe effect that comes in now and then... is that an emulation of the flicker that version picked up from the east connection video?

so is this

anything to do with this?

i was talking to a friend last night about making a film and he was telling me about the camera he's got. it's called a "black magic" (how do they get away with that nowadays?) and he's got the 2.5K version, but there's now a 6K version out. To put this into perspective, that East Co video is not even HD, it's probably 300-800 pixels across. then we had 1080 for ages, and now 2.5K is pretty wack and i'll wager that drill video you posted is probably 4K.

my point is... the video has moved on a lot but the sonic is still largely where it was? i mean maybe not, i know nothing about the tekkers of the sonic (and barely anything about video) but thought it worth mentioning.
