Leo lived in the real Brooklyn, with real Tony's, like Tony Manero and Tony Visconti. One time he was hanging out with Tom Moulton and Leo was like, "what if you, like, mixed it again, like re-did it, a remix" and Tom was like holy cow! At least that's how Tom tells it in his History of Disco doc, maybe Leo can correct the record for us

My friend just got into the Whitney ISP program for critics, which selects a couple people a year under thirty. One you get selected you're pretty much made as I understand—hooked into the network, become a known factor, can write wherever you want, etc. I guess she is part of the Mafia now though, unfortunately—and I'm not, damit!

It is sometimes, I think the precarity of the media situation means precarity mindset, people hoard capital rather than join forces, it's tragic. Something something tweet about class consciousness.

It's partly cuz the landscape is (mistakenly?) viewed as zero-sum, partly cuz the landscape is "about" (for a lot of people, I count myself out of them) the hierarchies of cultural capital, having more of it than the people immediately around you—which makes sharing counter-productive. It's ah eh an ugly impulse I can't lie.

isn’t this really a matter of “you only pass along opportunities you can’t take to people who will be able to pass you their’s later?”

your friend seems to be confused. getting into the Whitey ISP Program doesn't make someone a known factor, posting here does.

This is real, but there's also the mutual-hyping thing, media alliances, interviewee/interviewer dynamics, etc.

My partner's part of the artworld is very good at this, actually. Everyone's constantly throwing one another collabs. Come be "in conversation" with me at PS1. Come give a performance at the New Museum show I'm curating. Or the long history of writer-artist pairings, where the writer makes the artist's name by writing about them constantly, and when (as a result of being written about constantly, being PR-spun and conceptualized and inserted into discourses), the artist does in fact become Important, the writer now retroactively cashes in on all that cultural capital—being the authoritative source about X, getting kudos for "discovering" an act/scene, etc.

I basically think about this like a game of football

There's the version where you toss lobs and hope someone is interested enough to grab and run with it, and if you're lucky they're skilled enough to take it to the endzone, and maybe that happens enough and people start consistently lookin for your lobs etc that you become a presence

And there's the version where you coordinate in advance with some runningbacks. That one's a lot more reliable.
