In retrospect, perhaps I should have just started a thread called something like 'new black avant garde' and it could've been a catch all for Arthur Jafa, Deanna Lawson, Kerry James Marshall, RIP Germain, Voldy Moyo, Dean Blunt of course, but perhaps it would also have been a bit reductive you know?

Anyway, next up is this really good photographer from I think Harlem, Khalik Allah.

He's on a strong 5%er tip and I think worked with Poppa Wu.

Incredible images

There's a good video I can't find, perhaps it's an interview on soundcloud, where he's talking about developing his own film and pushing the stocks so he can get the shine he wants on the bodies.

Edit: found it
You can see a massive change from the earlier videos to where he starts to focus on the colour of the body.

It's similar to Kerry James Marshall, exploring the tones of black and looking for the other colours that sit inside black, that become reduced and/or obscured when we say 'black'.

Something I used to think about years ago was the colour brown, and how even the blackest black person and the whitest white person really were just shades of brown, but we push them into binaries.
