Was Trump a bulwark against The Globalists?

This was how they explicitly positioned themselves. Saw it referenced in something John posted on the Josef K thread this morning. I think it's true to some degree although I don't have clear enough sense of the factions involved to really delineate it properly. I don't think Trumpism is preferable to The Globalist Illuminati just that it's interesting that these schisms exist at the top levels. Or that you can stage an insurrection that wins you the presidency. It's all murky up there though, I can't tell what's going on.

Steve Bannon did interviews years ago where he basically called trump an empty vessel used to that effect. Bannon may have aggrandized the situation but probably at least some truth to it.

Turmp has described himself as a nationalist and the focus on controlling borders and the trade aggro with China are interesting examples of going against neoliberal globalisation.

But he is also, I would guess, someone who has directly profitted from international flows of people and capital. I'm sure he owns properties all over the world and is probably considering moving to one of them to avoid prosecution.

As with all things Trump, what his base hears him say is far more important than what he has actually done.

Also thinking of "The Globalists" is not a good way of putting it. Globalisation is a process and ideology. "Globalists" can mean lots of different things some of which are dodge.

As an internationalist I would like to see the globalisation of human neccesities and a world community.

yeah that's as far as I can get too. Basically no idea. But some intriguing ambiguities and tensions.

But do we think a globalist ethos will continue to be more rewarding, financially, than a nationalist ethos? I tend to think so. If it is more rewarding, that ought to tip the scales, no?

By "rewarding" I mean in a sort of natural selection manner, where the globally-minded tend to climb ranks at a swifter. more secure pace than the nationally-minded.

You mean will the biggest dons be globalist? The most powerful of power players?

Could already be the case, as far as I know. But perhaps globalism will increasingly define the fitness, the best practices, the dominant ethos, etc.

Perhaps. But we always tend to think there is a smooth and foreseeable vertical line upwards into the future that can be extrapolated from present trends. And it's not always the case.

Trump is a sociopathic grifter. Any bulwark isn’t necessarily chance due to manipulation by other agencies. Any number of elite forces (or lucky amateurs) could’ve disposed of Trump with a single bullet. Surprised he wasn’t assassinated, but it would’ve ruffled too many feathers of the higher ups, the real top brass.

All of this has been like the ghost of Colonel Kurtz returning and finally taking the grocery clerk out.
