Did it in August. I drove with my girlfriend up to the Llyn Peninsula. The A470 goes from Cardiff all the way to the top, it's like the Route 66 of Wales. It was wicked. There's a really evil bit of road when you get to the high points of Snowdonia.

Done the opposite route as a kid with my grandparents a stack of times, but Ynys Mon to St Davids. Cardigan and Mwnt beach, a little gaff called Naternis and the beach cove at Cwmtydu where no-one was there. To be frank I’m glad it isn’t more popular, although Cardigan certainly is.

Slight exaggeration for the benefit of our US friends.... but the point is the UK is too small for a proper road trip. You could do it in less than 24 hours of driving I reckon, whereas now, if I got the car and headed East I could theoretically drive to, I dunno, Vladivostok or something and it would take weeks.

Lake District was the first one I think. They didn’t really do any walking there, but neither would i if the bbc was paying for swanky Michelin treatment, day in day out.

Me you and Eden are the last of a dying breed. 1980s Hackney youth worker politics.

My first proper job was driving a van! (For a right on charity admittedly).

I haven't owned a car for many year though and then only briefly.

Used to drive from London to see the in-laws around Beddgelert and Porth:

London traffic jam -> motorway -> completely evil winding mountain roads when you are knackered. With rain.

Came unstuck a few times. We get the train now.

Nan, in Welsh “we’re going to see Gelert’s grave”.

Us, in English “who was Gelert, Nan?”

Nan, in Welsh “he was a very brave dog”

My sister, crying in English “we’re going to see a dead doggy? Nooooooo”

I've driven this, it wasn't terrifying at all. Everyone drives about 30mph on it. The only stressful parts are around LA.

The Amalfi Coast Road, now that's a scary one to drive.
There are some scary coast roads in Setubal, real windy* fuckers like in Herbie Goes Bananas or whatever... the locals rex round em really fast too.

* as in tortuous, not lots of wind, though maybe that too.

We're aiming to do Kent to South Portugal next year if we're ever allowed to travel again. Any recommendations for tiny cool villages with good food/scenery on the way would certainly be appreciated.

UK Road trips can be cool as long as you stay away from the motorways. London to Cornwall through all those A roads and past Stonehenge etc is a nice easy one, 5 hours or whatever. Pretty.
Coming through Lisbon?

This is the one that saved the baby by killing the wolf... But farmer comes back and sees blood on the mouth... so he shoots him?

A weird thing to build a tourist industry around...

My Nan’s favourite spot was Aberglaslyn. Haven’t been there for yonks. Tremendous routes from memory. We had a family photo done at the bridge there every year. Crimes against fashion and my sister’s tortoiseshell specs complete with a plaster holding the hinge together. Any bf she brought home, those photos came out.
