Migrants

Are you one?

You get different perspectives and inspirations as a creator or as a listener by being physically somewhere away from home,

and there are lots of combinations that bring with them different attitudes - being an "ex pat" or a tourist, an "illegal" or a colonialist or a traveller, frinstance

you may feel greater or less commitment and responsibility to your home or host culture, you may have a whole thing about your journey or your tribulations innit?

When I lived in the states back in the 90s I would put on illegal Britpop parties and I must say it gave me a new perspective on what i now called "The Motherland".

Sometimes it would bring out a nasty side of me, though – I'd play 'Married with Children' by Oasis, stand on top of the PA with my shirt off, swigging from an imported lukewarm bottle of Stella and scream in the stunned yankee's faces "YA MUSIC'S SHAYYYTE IT KEEPS ME OOP ALL NIGHT OOP ALL NIGHT!"

First thing that come to mind for me

The return to Africa has a kind of eschatological significance in Rasta. I like this song 'cos of it's reference to something very real - Marcus Garvey did actually set up and found the Black Star Line though they were only active for a few years. Infiltrated by the FBI apparently according to Wiki

My Dad was a migrant btw. That's the kind of origins of my relationship with black music. Never was drawn to whitey music, not until I was 17 or so, when I got curious. Listening to rap and identifying with shit like Zulu Nation, hip hop culture was a kind of way of exploring that identity. Helped that the music was so fucking amazing as well. I had a lot of Asian mates at the time who felt the same. Anything but that white slice.

I never get homesick but I was literally sick. I was allergic to the country. Always had a bunged up nose, couldn't breathe properly. It had identified me as a foreign body and was taking protective measures.

There's huge cockroaches everywhere swarming over every surface. They don't tell you about that in the tourist brochure.

Are we allowed to ask where he was from? My mum was from New Zealand came to England in the early 70s. Maybe that's partly why she felt comfortable settling in east London where there were people from all over.

He was Jamaican. He was black but light skinned due to me chinny man grandad. So I'm mixed race but "white presenting" (I've heard it called).

A mate of mine was out there, in NZ for a while, working, doing a big corporate gig. He always said it was so utterly strange, being so far away. Some friends went to stay with him and one of 'em heard a bird sing, midday, and was just like WTF is that!!!! - some completely alien sound.

This has probably changed a bit cos of the Internet but being so isolated and ignored was the source of a lot of its charms. they just pottered about doing their own thing.
