I'm really interested in it because I was also a young stoned white man prone to 'over-identification' with rap music. I worked out fairly early on that this wasn't something I would allow myself to do. But given different surroundings and different associates, a different context, it might have been me. You can easily imagine corpsey as one of these people. Rapping about sexual despair and depression and alienation. As I say, most on dissensus have been one of these people. And I think over-identification is a kind of superpower.

It's interesting to think about historical contingency, like, Luka might be the great untapped hip-hop talent, and if hip-hop had evolved differently so that there was any respect/legitimacy to white rap, he would be so famous rn, a poet laureate, and like, this forum wouldn't even exist he would've been so busy poppin bottles internationally, and everyone talking about the oughts blogging scene that gave rise to The Heronbone.

It could of happened. And corpsey too. We are the great lost great white hopes. But I don't know how comfortable I would feel at 41 with that weird legacy. Rap kept respect for the word alive though

I've said to Edmund we owe a lot of our personal safety and respect sitting on the street to rap. The young thugs approach us and tell us we are cool. They don't hassle us. And that is because of rap and the respect its inculcated for the written word. We don't get abuse.

Kids from the care homes approach us stinking of skunk, teeth missing, and ask us to write us a poem for their girls and give us twenty pound.

Corpsey

bandz ahoy
Eminem has that classic white rapper thing of being autistically obsessed with rhyming syllables but he managed (for a while) to transcend that with sheer wit and force of personality.
