it's time she was reevaluated. it's easy to give her a hard time, what with all the tabloid tales of her being a total parody of the demanding superstar, the nervous breakdown stories, the vibrato warbling everyone reckons she does on every record she makes (she doesn't) and the fact that your mum probably likes her. however, i'd contend that she's made some awesome records, has a fucking killer voice and that her new album is way up there in my top five of the year - so, yeah, as far as i'm concerned, big up mariah. thoughts?

The way that her last single had her singing hiphop cliche's ("it's like that y'all") with operatic perfection was really quite alluring.

Oh, and the stories about her being a total prima donna were, apparently, invented by the PR firm working for the hotel she was staying at.

Now, can we have a Kate Bush revival in time for solstice please?

Pon fiyah!

Plus she picked Old Dirty up from prison when he got out last year, so that's instant cred in my book.

I've been having my own Kate Bush revival over the last two weeks, which was largely triggered by finding out that Cloudbusting was all about the arrest of Wilhelm Reich from the perspective of his son. This kind of blew my tiny mind, 'cause I always thought it was just a generic sci-fi story set to music as opposed to actully being biographical. Also: mmmm Fairlight strings.

Anyway...back to Mariah...

Ah, I've got a friend who worked at a studio where she was recording in Miami or Orlando (this is a couple years ago, I haven't seen him in ages) who told me that there was a rule that studio staff couldn't look at her in the eye or get within ten feet of her.

this is the best R&B album of the year. teedra's album was just patchy really, mariah's album doesnt have one bad song on it. it has at least five classic R&B songs on it too. and the lead single has a bridge thats just fantastic!

We Belong Together is indeed fantastic - a slow jam that doesn't suck for once (that could be a new thread in itself).

I'd always dismissed her before, mainly due to the warbling and the schmaltziness. But maybe her personal problems have given her the ability to express emotional depth through her songs, which she certainly managess on this single.

Definitely a good album, not sure I love it as much as everyone else. I downloaded it early and got this bonus track "Secret Love" with Swizz Beats that is AMAZING. But then when I bought it, it wasn't there! I'm very disappointed. Explanation?

shes always had good songs on her albums, but people who dont like R&B and only got into her through her big grandiose ballads probably got put off.

going off version's COTD post...we need a MC primer. I know literally none of her songs but sense there are probably a half-dozen classics I should hear. Original singles, classic house remixes, let's have 'em.

Craner, aren't you a Mariah fan?

Yeah, I’m a big fan of ‘Fantasy’, ‘We Belong Together’ and every single D.E.A remix she is on.
