I haven't listened, but I've an idea of how it sounds. That Richard H. Kirk thing WashYourHands put me onto seems to fit the bill perfectly and I listen to it a lot.

This sort of stuff makes me think of oxygen bars at music festivals. Blue lights. Artwork like this,

What do you think when you hear this

Weirdly nostalgic; the post-Black Dog / Detroit-o-phile stuff is nice enough (I'm sure I own a few of the tunes on there) but the bits with the finnicky 'crunchy' beats are horrid. This was the soundtrack to most of the nights I went out to in the mid-late 90s. It suffers the curse of sophistication, but shorn of that veneer by passing time, some of it sounds quite palatable.
