Luke is always trying to subtly add 5 years to my age. It makes him feel better and it also strikes at the root of my vanity, so it’s a win-win game for him.

Didn't my guess actually make you younger this time?

Catalog made an interesting point saying there's never been a single musical act from Leeds. No inspiration in the water there.

Isn't craner from Wales? Being in late 90s Leeds as a student must've been like going to New York for him

gang of four i dunno, they were students really, i wouldn't say they were from leeds... i mean there's a few others like N.O.W as well, but generally pretty poor in comparison to...

leeds is of course very well known for no audience underground noise stuff, some of which is really good. ashtray navigations and now guttersnipe, people like that. solid audience scene but strangely no good new bands. very fashionable leeds, it gets in the way a bit. lots of asymmetrical haircuts and things.

i was thinking the other day, in fact drew a diagram, you could consider the triangle of manchester-leeds-sheffield to be the core of 'the north' and considered in this way, where it takes about an hour, maybe a bit more, to get from each to the other, as different wings of london, distances notwithstanding

I think if you were to go down that route you'd find a fair few acts associated with certain cities had at least one member who hadn't been born there. We gonna argue The VU weren't a New York band 'cause Cale came from Wales?

the m62, between leeds and manchester can be considered to be a river, the busiest in britain. the ganges. the peak district between sheffield and manchester is the mountains, narrow passes.

i mean, even if you included gang of four, it's unusually slim.

it's cos leeds gets swallowed up into the rest of west yorkshire i would say. before you even leave leeds you are in bradford. very quickly to the north becomes north yorkshire, basically a different country again.

i really like gang of four as it goes, but isn't it really odd that from that era, that's all you can think of? was marc almond also in leeds around that time? what about now? kaiser chiefs and that band hookworms that got cancelled. i think there's a lot of horrible infighting in leeds maybe, if that hookworms thing is anything to go on. very sewn up city.
