I refer you to the Equality Act 2010 specifically the following protected characteristic: "race including colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin".

"in the heady days of fin de siecle leeds, our hero turned up the collar on his crombie jacket and stepped out into the heaving throng of the great unwashed simpleminded folk..."

look you are racist and thats the end of it, lets not carp.

leeds was always the place i grudged a bit cos you had to go for certain things, but nowadays, i'm quite fond of it, as I am of the whole of the north, all of those three great cities, plus liverpool and hull of course. the five great metropolises of the north. the triangle in the middle and the lines either side.

actually let's add bradford to the triangle to make a rhombus and then we can do this

Sisters of Mercy were from Leeds and are relevant to this thread.

Also Iration Steppas who actually are a bit relevant too - that whole post-Shaka sound was a little gothic.

But it IS odd that Sheffield (which is smaller?) has a bunch of influential bands and Leeds not so much.

Leeds, like all the northern cities, has denied its black musical heritage, but strangely, far less so than eg Manchester or Liverpool.

Leeds carnival is the biggest in the North I would say, way bigger than Manchester. Nothing approaching Notting hill but you get that feeling of a takeover.

and Chapeltown can be a buzz. There used to be a bar called rhythms that was like a blues.

Why some big cities don't produce anything good is a mystery innit. Newcastle's massive innit but what's it done for us? NOTHING
Weirdo noise scene from Newcastle is pretty good. Or at least that area. Culver/Lee Stokoe, tusk festival and opal tapes.

And ofc Morden tower that legendary venue.

I like the poetry revival from Newcastle the most, basil bunting influencing Tom pickard and Barry macsweeney. Much better 60s poetry scene than eg Leeds or mcr I think.

Yeah Iration steppas and subdub are a big thing.

Leeds is not bigger than Sheffield, no way. Leeds is a very tiny posh town centre, very small ring road. So it's more intense maybe, but Sheffield is bigger and way more post industrial, lots of discrete areas and massive warehouses. When you are in Sheffield you feel like you are in a proper city in the way you also do in Manchester, whereas you don't in Leeds. Both Sheffield and Leeds have tram systems whereas Leeds can't support.
