I don't think she has a great technical voice and Grande towers over her in terms of range and control, but I think Cyrus has a really emotive, expressive voice and her performances with it are good for different reasons. She's like Sinead O'Connor - an skilled interpreter rather than a gifted vocalist.

I mean I am really fond of her despite at best liking maybe half of anything I've heard by her. She's pro-drugs, sex-positive, an active advocate for LGBT issues, and not afraid to be the punchline. And she did all this knowing she had a huge audience waiting to see her fail.

Anyway I think she might be the last child star turned pop culture personal disaster, purely because as markets fragment and children's entertainment becomes its own separate niche, there won't be a kid's show as popular or ubiquitous as Hannah Montana or The Disney Club. YouTube Kids and Netflix Who's Watching means it's all ghettoised and easy to ignore.

yeah but me and my mates always make this joke:

'when is Miley going to be queer again'

queer-people in hetero-presenting relationships are still queer and I don't think she's really given up on that public identity despite her "straight" relationship

that's not the point of the joke though.

Look most of my crowd find 'queer' as a box itself too constructing and basically delineated more by market demands.
