i have a fantasy of settling into a low profile common job at huge company, going to work each day in a indistinct bullpen amid a thousand wide grid, rows and columns of identical spaces. performing some monotonous, undemanding job for which my accountability is abstracted through an impossible bureaucratic network that noone bothers to work out. there is a sense of liberation in it, a total surrender of myself.

What do you do for money at the moment?

Maybe you should read some Wallace. The Pale King's about people working for the IRS in the 80s and covers a lot of that sort of thing.

“True heroism is minutes, hours, weeks, year upon year of the quiet, precise, judicious exercise of probity and care—with no one there to see or cheer. This is the world.”

It's because he thinks being a modern intellectual means taking business seriously and taking capitalism seriously and believing in it deeply and passionately. He thinks anti big business anti capitalist stances are juvenile and contemptible.
That doesn't mean he has to leave the forum though. It's not as though we had a screaming row, or even a serious argument. I'm also not anti-capitalist, I just think it needs to be more tightly regulated.

He's threatened to leave about 20 times just like Gus. It's just something they do.

my fantasy is simple, it has to do with nullifying anxiety of performance, being judged, representing my worth, embodying my potential. the fantasy is about blending into a monochrome mass and becoming no-one.

Sounds like exactly your fantasy.

“The truth is that the heroism of your childhood entertainments was not true valor. It was theatre. The grand gesture, the moment of choice, the mortal danger, the external foe, the climactic battle whose outcome resolves all--all designed to appear heroic, to excite and gratify and audience. Gentlemen, welcome to the world of reality--there is no audience. No one to applaud, to admire. No one to see you. Do you understand? Here is the truth--actual heroism receives no ovation, entertains no one. No one queues up to see it. No one is interested.”

look, this is the stupidest thing i’ve heard in a long time. i don’t think i can do anything if this is what i’m up against.

i think it’s time for me to flounce. loads of good grime mixtapes here but i think something’s gone rotten. too many five pint nights and late nights at raves and eventually your frontal lobe starts to break down. it’s tragic to see really.

best of luck to the good and wise posters hanging out here.

I nearly typed a huffy response like "You win. Just let them use slaves" when I couldn't answer his questions, but decided against it.
