One's imagination may suffice, but actually seeing it and hearing it has physiological, neuropsychological effects that operate beyond consciousness. The sensory dimensions to sex can be replicated by certain media much more robustly than the average imagination. But yeah you're right, its the same principle.

I think actually having something to sensorily experience just activates certain biological mechanisms that pure imagination does not, mechanisms that have profound psychological ramifications.
That said, one can exercise their imagination to incredible heights, and engage in a sort of astral simulation of a sensory experience, perhaps even managing to activate the kind of mechanisms I just mentioned.

The emasculation question has fallen out of vogue I think. Its telling that almost every piece of media mentioned in this thread is over a decade old. The only subsets still explicitly concerned with it are your reactionary types on the fringe, and mainstream groups that can be assumed susceptible to the rhetoric rally around nationality, ethnicity, and class instead. easy answer is that the white male struggle (and I think whiteness is intimate here) in light of the last ten years is not only uncool but untoward. but another side could be along what patty was gesturing at with the 'empowered nerd'- processes that were once looked at as emasculating are now places to assert dominance, aggression, manliness. Something like 'tech bro' should be an oxymoron but it isn't.

and not just a tech concern. the workplace rebranding as a less hierarchical, inclusive place- cool bosses and all that- are part of it. harder to say your being emasculated when you cant identify exactly who is doing it, and likewise that open space where authority once was is opportunity for the manly assumption of that role.
