Locker room talk: rolling basketball thread

I can grab and hang on the rim but can't quite get high enough to dunk. you need to be able to hold the ball above the rim (obviously) to do it. I'm only 6'2".

What's the best skill you can do @Leo? Or anyone who plays basketball in fact, if you were just sort of warming up and some hot girls walked past and they just kinda happened to stop to chat and maybe watch youse playing out of the corner of their eye, what trick would you just casually do so they would be impressed?
Or, would you not do an individual trick but make yourself look good at, say, @linebaugh's expense by taking the ball off him and running him ragged - doing all that stuff where you bounce it through his legs and pick it up on the other side of him as he's gormlessly looking left and right completely unaware of where the ball is?
How about you @suspended, do you have a special move that you can show off with?

he throws the ball over his shoulder from 50 yards without looking, without breaking his stride, and scores every time

I reckon I would have had fun playing basketball, I like sports where you can do this kind of thing to fool people. In general I enjoy the little duels within the bigger game that you have in some sports. You can get some satisfaction from winning your battle even if your team loses overall. And yeah I particularly like it can be done with a certain amount of flair... although, it cuts both ways, if someone tries a ridiculous trick and gets someone then great, but if the defender reads it and takes the ball from him then it can make the dribbler look stupid.

I like the over the shoulder aspect of this one but otherwise it's fairly mundane, not sure it even counts as a trick does it?

Or am I barking up the wrong tree here, this kind of thing is an element of basketball isn't it? I know that a lot of sort of showing off is done via dunks but isn't it also celebrated when someone takes the piss out of an opponent by sending him the wrong way and then running past him, maybe letting him come back, doing it again and so on so he's completely confused, head spinning - ideally doing training ground tricks on someone so much that they lose it and try to swing viciously at you but they can't even land that and then their trousers fall down and they fall over and everyone laughs?

Don't they call it breaking ankles or snapping ankles or something when you send someone totally the wrong way?

no need for tricks. just hit a string of three-pointers (shots from 30 feet or further), that'll wet some knickers.

I was kinda joking about the knickers, but I was genuinely interested in the tricks. Are there any good ones you can do? I guess scoring is impressive (as I said above) and all that but I'm talking about dribbling skills here.

@shakahislop you live in NY so did you learn to play basketball? Do you ever join in on those courts where you walk past and there is a game on? Can anyone do that or is there some sort of hierarchy? How does one demonstrate that they are good enough to get in the game? What happens if you're not?

When we were in Morocco there were loads of football games on the beach and I would just stand closer and closer to the games looking wistfully at them until someone eventually took pity on me. They all played bare foot and I was a bit worried about kicking the ball with no shoes but that was actually fine. What wasn't fine was the hard sand on the soles of my feet, as I played I slowly became more and more aware of them hurting... and then hurting more and more. I thought that I would just run it off but it got so bad I had to stop. Next day I had the worst blisters I had ever had, they were massive, all across the part of the foot that the toes grow out from, I don't know what it's called really but the bit that touches the ground I guess. The blisters were so bad that I could barely walk for the next two weeks, all through the rest of the holiday when we walked down the street I had to literally lean on Liza to support me and allow me to walk in ways that distributed my weight differently and didn't cause me agonising pain. It was (pretty much) worth it though, so much fun just playing football with random strangers on the beach for hours. The universal language of football I guess and it was a beautiful thing. Liza may have been a little bored mind...

I've also liked behind-the-back passing, not that I've ever done it in a game.

Yeah that's kinda what I'm talking about. So crossover is when you change directions or you change hands or what?

But these seem fairly basic, like he's going one way and then switches to the other and the main thing is the execution really... same as in football really, you send someone the wrong way by REALLY looking as though you are going one way and then switching to the other, and there are more or less ridiculous ways of that doing that, but none are really better than the most basic version if ti's done convincingly enough.

Are there any truly super flair type ones?

Now you're talking. This the sort of thing - if you get it wrong you look like an absolute bell-end and everyone laughs... but fuck it, if you get it right, just for one second you are on top of the world.

it's the kind of thing you do when the score isn't close, one team is blowing out the other and the play isn't that serious anymore. coaches would probably be pissed if you did this sort of thing in a close game.

I saw this one where I think his hand goes behind his back and then he puts the ball through the other guy's legs and collects it afterwards - that move is surely designed to piss people off.

In fact, look at the one that starts at 1.27 - he puts it behind his back and then through the other guy's legs and then while he's still confused he takes it back round him again. Lucky not to get punched i'm thinking.
