I was too young to be aware of it at the time, but it's also what happened after 9/11 when people like James Wood used it to attack writers like Zadie Smith, DeLillo and Pynchon and declared "the end of irony,".

Dan Houser is "thankful" he’s not releasing Grand Theft Auto 6 in the age of Trump. “It’s really unclear what we would even do with it, let alone how upset people would get with whatever we did,” says the co-founder of Rockstar Games. "Both intense liberal progression and intense conservatism are both very militant, and very angry. It is scary but it’s also strange, and yet both of them seem occasionally to veer towards the absurd. It’s hard to satirise for those reasons. Some of the stuff you see is straightforwardly beyond satire. It would be out of date within two minutes, everything is changing so fast."

Interesting but I'm not sure the state of things in this respect has changed much since biden right? There's still two absurd extremes. so wonder what they'll do. setting in the past they could just sidestep the whole thing I guess.

i think the times suit dumb satire very well personally but at their age they might have lost the stomach for it.

One interesting about V is I would argue that the presenter of the pop station radio is the same person (not literally, but from the same mould, born into a different era) as the presenter of the alternative station in San Andreas and that this mirrors the move away from the oppositional and into semi-ironic embrace of capitalist values.

it's more sophisticated than that but I'm mentally lazy and I trust you all enough that I don't need to articulate it in minute granular detail.

If i remember right the pop station presenter is cara delevigne, as herself. actually all the DJ's are real people (I think lee scratch perry is one of them) whereas in the old games they were parodies

You had George Clinton, Axl Rose, Chuck D, Sly and Robbie etc in San Andreas

Oh right. but i think they were more like characters rather than as themselves. the radio X alternative one I remember as a cartoonish pisstake of the grunge/alt rock culture

I think Cara is playing that same vapid child of privilege but the dialectic of culture has landed her in different position

This is her great grandfather irl,

... Greenwood was closely identified with the aggressive use of two specially formed paramilitary forces — the Black and Tans and the Auxiliaries — during the Irish War of Independence. After the burning of the centre of the city of Cork by British auxiliary forces in December 1920, Greenwood blamed the "Sinn Féin rebels" and the people of Cork for burning their own city. "A Lloyd George loyalist who believed in restoring British rule in Ireland by defeating the IRA, Greenwood’s denials and evasions became so frequent that he was lampooned with the phrase 'to tell a Greenwood'."

That's hilarious cos I just read a thing in the Evening Standard about how her dad got her name from the in-flight Ryan Air magazine because he used to fly back and forth between London and Dublin a lot. It said it was helping contribute to Anglo Irish friendship.

The very arguments against/attacks on alternative rock radio x makes in San Andreas are what lead to the poptimist/ironic embrace of the mainstream represented on V's non-stop pop FM

love this pisstake of football on one of the GTA radio ads.

"let off flares, riot and commit race crimes - just like the sophisticated europeans do! ('YOU'RE SHIIIT AND YOU KNOW YOU ARE')"

V has a much higher proportion of grotesquely obese pedestrians. also far higher proportion of 4x4s and SUVs. and lots
of weed dispensaries and smoking paraphernalia stores. all presumably reflecting real changes in american society.
