One striking thing
1. The iconography of the city in these olden days is a no go zone patrolled by psychopathic street punks

It's this taken to the extreme. A city wholly abandoned to criminals. Like those South American prisons where the guards vacate the interior and let the prisoners run it themselves. You watch Rubble Kings and it doesn't feel all that far fetched. Vietnam vets coming back and imposing military discipline on street gangs. Cocaine money converted into weaponry etc.

I like bits of it - the green-edged scans of the city, some of the music, Kurt Russell, the general idea of what happens to NYC - but it's clunky and irritating. The car with the lampshade headlamps, the wrestling match. It's just a bunch of stupid and poorly executed ideas cobbled together.

yeah but it's too camp at the same time. as if the psycho street punks will immediately revert to leather waistcoats and stuff. and crossbows

I like that though and again, it's not actually a million miles from actual looks of the real street gangs like the Warriors, the Baseball Furies and the Lizzies.

the warriors is an even sillier version of this. not just the gang "uniforms" but the silly gothic high priest character

There's a bit I thought was interesting in the second one with a bunch of Beverly Hills celebrities and plastic surgeons holed up in a makeshift surgery who are abducting people and harvesting their organs and facial features. Again though, the idea's cool but the execution's poor.

I love the bit at the start where they're saying some shit about the president to Russell and he just goes "President of what?".
