This is the opening scene of belly I think, directed by hype Williams.

very weird how in this scene from belly, hype williams has them switch gummo by harmony korine on. such an incongruous thing!!

hype knew his shit.

arthur jafa says hype invented the slow shutter speed thing that spielberg used in the opening scenes of saving private ryan, which won his cinematographer the oscar. hype williams was that DoPs assistant on a music video and showed him the shutter speed trick that he'd been using on all his hip hop videos (most famous eg is busta rhymes 'put your hands where my eyes can see').

Rewatched Raw Deal last night and it was much worse than I'd remembered. There are some great lines, but Arnie's so wooden they don't really land. You get a lot of scenes of him trying to be slick with a suit and cigar and it doesn't work at all. They're just bizarre.

Watched Belly last night. Weird film. The story and acting are pretty standard, sometimes poor, but it looks so good I don't mind too much. It's got a bit of a cyberpunk feel to it; looks more futuristic than a lot of contemporary sci-fi.

Gaspar Noe came to mind re: some of the colours and titles too. I don't know if it's a late 90s thing or whether Noe and Williams just happened to be around at that time, but the colour saturation in their stuff's something I associate with that period, particularly now that everything looks so washed out in comparison. Kubrick did it with Eyes Wide Shut too. They've all got this thick, glowing sort of look, like streetlights and signs reflected on a wet road.

Criterion, Indicator, Arrow or someone should do a decent blu-ray. It's the kind of thing that would benefit from that treatment.

One thing which seems a real artifact of 80s and 90s cinema is the terrorist/mobster/hijacker with long hair. You don't see many films with a white guy running around with a ponytail, earring and an uzi these days,
