I imagine parents wouldn't normally talk politics with their children, but last week was different. this wasn't just some arcane policy decision, it was a riot that was covered wall-to-wall on the news and social media.

I got taken to marches in support of the ANC. It was like being raised by John Eden actually.
A good grounding in life! My daughter was on the big anti-Iraq war march and the smaller anti-war in Afghanistan one when she was a baby. And a few things since.

My parents probably drifted closer to the centre with Blair and the rest of the country although they were never radicals. Activists but not radicals. My mum still does stuff but it's not political any more. Just charitable.

My parents told me Nelson Mandela was a terrorist.
My old man was a lifelong leftie. I think he was a Communist when younger, used to sing the Red Flag and cry or so he said.. I met the guy who'd I think radicalised once, a Labour historian of the Caribbean (Richard Hart). He was never involved in organised politics in any sense though, in this country - thank fuck. I'm grateful for my childhood memories not being stuffed with terrible activists and afternoons at dreary fundraisers.

What was weird was you had a group of people actively trying to kill the government and succeeding sometimes.

I remember reading Alan Clarke's Diaries and the Proddies bumped off his mate, Ian Gow. He was met at the barriers at whatever station he'd commuted into. After they told h said "how terribly spiteful of them". Weird to think about that as a backdrop to politics.

I don't think anything else can have the same instant massively transformative effect of psychedelics. Nothing you can reliably procure at any rate. Otherwise you're limited to a more gradual lifting yourself out of the sludge with the usual dreary but ultimately rewarding good habits
it's more expensive, but try having children
