Which part of contemporary life can be untangled from capitalism?

well nothing if you go with the definition of capitalism that's "the way things are."

and to some degree, I agree that the way this system organises our habits of life, the way the market subsumes society to some extend and not the other way around, i do think that it has pervasive authority over how we form meaning.

but again, when I see someone lamenting that in capitalism everyone is seen as nothing but a productive unit of labor I can't help but believe deeply that the exact same thing would be true under socialism if not in a much less abstract way.

Im not sure. socialism is another one of those inscrutable nebulous terms. Im not sure thats whats going on in this conversation though. I dont think the use of capitalism has been so facile. a slippery slope, maybe

You can't be English and win on penalties, darts or snooker definitely, not discriminating.

1 of the disadvantages of being a kid in the 70's and early 80's was the standard of story telling that extended across literature to the BBC, ITV et al, was vast, exceptional and yet both fun and nuanced. It's hard not to see every other cultural exercise through such filters and i say that as a parent, juggling ethics, not helped by my sister dragging me to a bunch of diabolical Herbie cinema trips, bitch. Shit car anyway, possessed even, bedevilment.

ET hitting the first run of video rentals caught my brothers and their mates more, space-faced dildo finger and phone fixations - 0898-E-T - cash burners lurking all around. I guess what i'm trying to say is the paradox of watching Rent-a-ghost while playing with a miniature Darth Vader, the two crossed-over somewhere and innocence is one of the most invested in markets of all. The McToy.

That's why all my lot sleep out in the snow, like dogs. Earnest. Fire-arm drills. Maintaining an open fire on a wooden boat. That's gone wrong before, but they learned a significant lesson not drowning. Wife always brings it up. On and bloody on "who starts a fire in a wooden boat?". When the national grid goes down she'll come round.

What was the question sorry?
