Insomnia

That is a risk with weed so you have to follow hemingway's 'write drunk edit sober' dictum when creating stuff stoned.

At the same time I think it unlocks creative/analytical thoughts in your mind that you'd never have sober. So it is very useful in that respect.

Radio helps me with waking up in the middle of the night. I find I really suffer only when I'm stuck with my thoughts, frustrated with boredom, wasted time, fatigue. But put on some history of Rome shit and I drift off pleasantly half an hour later, no effort or energy required, the most passive stimulus

My main problem has always been getting to sleep, once the switch has flicked I don't wake up until an alarm or I'm rested. I don't know if that really counts as insomnia but it's still nightmarish when your in this limbo zone for hours of too tired to do anything interesting (or you feel it's just prolonging things) but not tired enough to actually switch off. thinking round in circles for hours. I once heard on radio 4 someone say imagine a waterfall as vividly as you can for as long as you can, it can be useful way to break the cycle a bit.

i subscribe to the opposite of this myself. write with a cold rational mind first thing after waking as sober as you'll ever be and fresh from dreaming. then when you've got a big notebook full get pissed one evening and have a great night reading through thinking that bit's wicked i'm a genius, that bit's crap lol what was i thinking *drinks* who gives a fuck, get rid of it - red marker pen handy. this works

weed is useless for creativity as your too lean to do anything, mind you i have recorded about ten albums under the stuff

What I've noticed about doing weed recently is that it makes you dwell on every idea that comes into your head a bit longer, it also makes every thought feel like a eureka moment, meaning you end up thinking a lot of stupid ideas are important.
And this is the reason why.

You do get a lot of musicians who are constantly stoned but probably being constantly stoned changes your mentality when on it.

Weed is good for creativity but not any sort of pre planned session I've found. More so get high and see where your motivation lands. Sometimes weed helps with music but it's so rare that the high youre having jives with the project at hand its probably not worth it

I found weed bad for making music back when I did that, I'd fixate on tiny things for hours and then realise the next day the track was terrible anyway.
I think it's particularly bad for producing because you can just be listening to the same loop for hours, a bit different for instrumentalists etc

The usual advice works for me tbh,
  • Force yourself to get up at a decent time.
  • Do things throughout the day to tire yourself out.
  • Don't eat too much at night.
  • Get off the computer and read or watch a film before bed instead.

Ear plugs are a good idea.

@DannyL you probably know all about sleep hygiene, but kids, a job that’s had a Covid bomb dropped on it, then being “Dad” when you’re fucked is going to test anyone. Careful with sleeper scripts. Zopiclone is ok (ish), I’ve had to use it at times, leaves that zinc-y taste for a few hours after but 15mg should get a grown male.

It might be that a script can reconsolidate a sleep pattern and as the vaccine rolls out and life (somehow) renormalises, the background stress interference drops off too. Had some mates become untethered from prolonged insomnia and parenthood, difficult balancing act.

I generally don't have trouble sleeping, but heres a technique that may be of interest. Try finding a lecture to watch on youtube. That way, you're either up and learning, or it simply puts you to sleep.

I'm never taking sleeping advice off you
