Customers demand Emotion Recollected in Tranquility. But that's a recipe for Dirty Bathwater Consommé, and, come the health inspectors, what's the chef gonna say? Canny neurotics long ago learned the value of (a pretense of) depersonalization, from Yeats's Hallowe'en masks and Eliot's "It's Trad, Dad!" through Berryman's minstrel show to Merrill's Weejee board and Forché's Hollywood foreign correspondent. Still, their weak point should be pretty obvious.

Here's Alex Kaschuta: "Trad seems to be the category you fall into if you stray from the Yass Kween school of the 24/7 female neoliberal empowerment firehose."

From Catholic Twitter to GK Chesterton to baroque architecture revivals, how do you feel about the swing to traditionalism? Do you identify as trad?

It's about the return to tradition. Western Civilization. Great men and chastity belts.

I'll let him pick his own pronouns but our guy HMT is probably the board's representative of a trad outlook, perhaps he can explain it for us

@suspended what's your opinion of Justin Murphy? I guess more specifically do you think represents any critical ideological categories, and do you think he voices any of it well?

He comes to mind when I think of a young left intellectual trad-catholic demographic.

im only pulling your leg. It's about the search for a white identity. Particularly among young, gauche and desperately racist Americans. We've talked about it a fair bit here, though mostly in passing. What it amounts to seems to be posting, on Twitter, a picture of a cathedral (any old cathedral will do) or a Greek statue side by side with a generic post war office block, or a drunk woman puking in her stilletto and saying "look at how far we have fallen."

I'm not convinced its impossible to reclaim certain critical traditional values without sacrificing some of the more egalitarian values enabled by the subsidence of such traditions.

That is to say, I believe its possible. Just can't be done in bad faith. By returning to certain traditional values, which untradiitonal values are you sacrificing? And who stands to suffer from such sacrifices?

Yeah I would be surprised if the mainstream bar was much higher than this.

I'm working from the notion that almost any return to tradition is spearheaded by those who are generally against egalitarian values and protocols. But as I said above, I;m not convinced its impossible to sublate the two.

Young people's historical imagination is shaped by games. Their sense of the past is shaped primarily by games. Sometimes you see these people use wildly anachronistic words like 'honour'. the heroic virtues are played out via the control pad. Into battle, brothers!

woops

is not like other people

you can see this in the various militant twitter posts and also in that soldier's manifesto someone posted that he wrote before going on a killing spree. people who are unhinged latching on to bizarre notions of honour and duty nicked from shit films and cheesy computer games

What does this comparison to do with racism?
