@boxedjoy you really couldn't get into Mozart?

why would I want to? There's a world of sonic thrills every Friday on my Spotify Release Radar, on Bandcamp and Youtube, and I have a hard enough time keeping up with that, never mind the rest of the music from the past ~30 years of dance and electronic stuff that I'm drawn to. Mozart is just some boring old white guy making music that doesn't say anything to me about my life and doesn't sound as lush or intricate or adventurous or whatever as 2021 can and could.

tradition is just peer pressure from dead people. Tradition is why homophobia and racism and sexism exist and that all needs to get fucked.

That's why it's impossible not to look askance at all this 'tradition' cosplay. We all know what it's about really.

I'm always suspicious of people my age who are into things like the pin-up girls aesthetic and vintage clothes shopping etc. Nostalgia for a time of segregated bathrooms.

Those people have always existed. Well, at least since those things could be regarded as vintage. I don't exactly know what they represent, as a tribe, but they seem to be eternal.

"It's from the video game franchise 'Dishonoured'"

That golden one character I like has a series where he plays Skyrim and narrates his playing as if he is the pure nordic blood line fighting off the degeneracy of modernity. From the comments:

‘When I visited Scandinavia for the first time, I actually expected to see people who were reminiscent of vikings. Instead I saw a lot of weak men pushing strollers, kneeling before feminists all day long and acting all feminine and demoralized. It's about time you guys started acting like vikings. You are both string and intelligent, use those gifts.’

For America I think the 80's are crucial- the rise of the nostalgia industry, Reaganism and the insistence on the family as the defacto political unit. Re: Jameson's architectural point, the reaction against modernist architecture degrading the 'fabric of the traditional city and its neighborhood culture' was also the first point where America at large cared for architecture to begin with. 40 years post war the self evidence of American exceptionalism wanes, accelerated by Vietnam and 70's economic stagnation, and we have a collective waking up moment to a culture that never invested in the trappings of the traditional to start, at least not to the level of other parts of the world. The american inferiority complex w/r/t europe could come into play here.

This is why we were talking about Terminator and Robocop. Reagan invoking a mythical 50s/early 60s mirrored by Trump invoking a mythical 80s.

Jane Jacobs is a starting point for many of these arguments!

80s are a nostalgia industry in part because of how much things started flatlining in the 70s. I've been meaning to make a thread about what the heck happened in 1972

But I'd also hazard that almost any modernist society is gonna have trad pushback. England has always had pastoralism.
