No, it's that you don't understand friction. I know exactly what Webbie is talking about here with the flatness of these tunes. There's no grind. Ditto Alkaline: it's all teasing, and tongue foreplay, but there's no actual penetration.

Barty had this same approach, there's no burning libidinal desire, it's just pleasure as agnostic hedonism. Luke is the complete opposite, he's a sex bomb like Craner, the thought of listening to music as ambient is horrific to him, as it is me.

that in itself is interesting, how can alkaline make some of the most explicit music replete with an overabundance of sexual signifiers yet his delivery be curiously frictionless, but you don't want to have that debate. You don't want to be critical, fair enough, but then don't blame others for being.

@Benny B i'm sorry i have to repeat it THIS GUY?

you can't see how ridiculous he is, yes i get it for yard this is the most obscene shit cause deeply christian country so what we might see as tacky is seen as rappers dabbling in and making devil music(there's people over here who get all up in a tizzy about J Hus and them saying bonsam and dat) but like man sounds like Freiza off Dragonball Z on parts of that tune.

yup, goblin voices.

I like ridiculous things, don't see what's wrong with that.

I think the 'flatness' you're referring to, and that I've seen Luka complaining about as well, adds to the cold blooded menace of it all. Skeng sounds like an evil spirit coming to take your soul or something.
Getting hype just sounds corny nowadays in this climate, the energy is very different. Now you have to sound like a vengeful ghost, it's just how it is.

i do think there's a potentially interesting discussion there. obviously you're both right.

to have the discussion you just have to step out of the right/wrong
good/bad framework and actually let the thing be the thing it is and understand how it works and why its new and different
and what that low to the ground, frictionless glide allows for and represents etc

yeah that helps but you just have to tell third to fuck off hes not here to have a discussion

Well yeah that's my last word on this for now though. it could be an interesting topic to discuss I agree, but not with him

the bigger problem with the music for me is the vocalists are terrible and the writing is even worse as you've mentioned (specifically with skillibeng)
the sound itself though can be evilly seductive

luka

but these are problems that plague music generally in the digital era where far too much music gets released and not enough time is spent on anything

I think here are loads of great vocalists though. The ratio of good to bad vocalists (and songs) probably isn't much different to what it's always been.

I do think Skillibeng probably did try to do too much this year and the quality levels dipped compared to last year, but he still did a ton of songs I did like.
