Sometimes I love skillibeng, sometimes he does my head in. He is unique though, doesn't sound like anyone else in dancehall so you've got to hand it to him.

i don't know how you didn't expect this cause dancehalls been MASSIVE in Africa for a while now, they got Stonebwoy and dem man over there doing it and you got guys like Wizkid and Burna Boy who their music whose some debt to the genre
I honestly had no idea, but I probably wasn't paying attention

This new guy's voice is nice and gritty and ragged for those pining for a bit of rough

The bartman has put me onto another new guy from Spain Town who I'd initially dismissed as a Skeng copyist, but these two are bangers and he will probably get big this year: Bayka

This is his new one, Real Life Killa

I really like them I've been banging them out.

Like I said I wrote him off originally as a Skeng rip off at first but he's a bit grittier maybe. Skeng's initial run of 4 or 5 tunes from last year have become classics now and I think his influence will loom large over dancehall this year.

Probably the South African influence will trend this year too going by some of these recent tunes, which I'm a bit wary of, but if it properly fuses with the trap sound we could have something good.

I'm imagining those huge sounding hypnotic, percussive, tribal SA influenced beats fused with the bangingness of trap, those intricate hi hat rolls, but with plenty of gunchat on top.

If on whap whap whap skillibeng didn't sound like a decrepit Yorkshire terrier I could probably get with it more.

I really like those Bayka tunes you posted a while back Benny. Skillibeng tries one's patience if you feel obliged to check everything new, but I like Whap and I liked Yo. I agree there is a conservatism to the backlash--reminds me of online american rap fans shitting on Carti.

There was an era where every single dancehall youtube had tons of comments from Kenyans, so I do think the fandom there is even bigger than in Nigeria/ Ghana.

Yeah I know nothing about Kenya but in naija and Ghana it's been massive for years and years, probably all over Africa. I think popcaan toured Africa recently and he got treated like a god.

I loved Yo btw and maybe whap will grow on me, I've only listened to it once tbh. I liked this recent one as well, more like his older style from when he first got big

Here's a good example of where it could go. I prefer this to whap, it's got the autotune and pitchshifting vocals as well as the gunchat.

bandz ahoy
Feel like I could use either a better soundsystem at home to listen to this stuff or to hear it in a club.

It sounds a bit tinny on my speakers. Need a sub.
