New R&B

why wouldn't it apply? The effect is the same - how successful is the performance is the measure.

You think the performance is the measure, not me.

I enjoy r&b on headphones, or in the club, or while actually djing with it. The performers i would be likely to actually go and see would be more from the Neo Soul/Soul/Funk/Jazz camp tbh, so whether or not some R&B singer can perform well, in between kicked about between major labels and having her albums arbitrarily shelved, doesn't really matter so much.

When people come over and give me this type of chat while i am djing, i usually tell them to fuck off and stop being so utterly joyless.

I don't understand why anyone would want to harass a DJ and start talking about authenticity when they're trying to dance and have a good time, get those weirdos out your venue

and to be clear: performance in this context doesn't mean "live show" it means the theatre and spectacle of identity conveyed on record

You'd be amazed at some of the things people want to talk to me about in the club, i think i almost prefer it when Jamaican girls get my attention by angrily grabbing my hair to pull me over to them to tell me to "stop playing this afrobeats shit and play some bashment" which was also a depressingly common occurrence.

I realised this after i posted tbh, fair enough.

love the Destiny Rogers and the Raveena ones! I wasn't convinced by "Pasadena" but I love "Bouncin" - the whoa-oh-oh hook is engraved on my brain already

also how is it fair that any human being gets to look like she looks like?

Bouncin is a better song, for sure. I reckon Pasedena is rife for layering an Amen track over in the club.

New Mahalia riffing on this old Montell Jordan track with the recreation of the Claudja Barry sample.
Ending up more of a Bop, than a Banger or Jam.

Love this new T-Pain one sampling one of his own classics

Was reading an article today about how he went into depression when Usher told him he ruined music back in 2013, on top of all the other pile ons/disses from Kanye and Jay Z etc and it really made me feel sorry for him. I love his music, he's as good or better than any of them I reckon.

there's an episode centred around Auto-Tune on the new Netflix show This Is Pop where he talks about Usher's comments etc, it's a really good watch and his "victory moment" at the end is so uplifting

Which male has the best vocals in modern R&B?

Is it a toss up between the woman beater Chris Brown or the kiddy fiddler Usher? (And let's not even mention that R Kelly guy)

Say it ain't so.

Something so contemporary about this, in that it's got that late 90s timbaland/darkchild underpinning (hints of 2 step) but also sounds kind of indie and sad – not full throated
