notation in music?

following the shitstorm under a convo between mark fell and rian treanor cut from the wire

notation (its pianoroll equivalent in case of computer made music ironically seeming to be the last stronghold) seems to be not so popular these days, even daw warlocks like hudmo started striving towards working without a screen at some point, same case with the laptop beatmaker to modular zealot pipeline

not even mentioning the whole thing with classism/racism/generally rigid fukery/disdain towards improv in music academia as that's been going on for decades now

I don't know a single thing about this topic but I don't usually let that stop me from contributing.

The pair of them come across as completely gormless so it's probably that which has peoples hackles up. You can excuse it in the kid but it's embaressing from the dad.

come on it's a silly article I think. clickbait

tl;dir if you can read music you are a tool of western hegemony and basically think slavery is a good idea

looking forward to third form finding this thread though

I thought it was an ok lighthearted discussion as part of a wider convo. I have no skin in the game though. Most music I listen to or see live isn’t scored.

The Wire have blates done this for clicks. Not seen that many comments under their articles before.

The huffing and puffing is great.

He just uses Max, iirc.
OK cool. I dunno how that works but I think there was a previous piece in which he said he left a routine running and didn’t always listen to the piece all the way through.

So presumably that could be transcribed somehow. Although that would be pointless because there aren’t orchestras queuing up to perform his work. Especially now lol.

He's talked in the past about how he doesn't like linear timelines and visuals of where the music's going,

There is that group Zeitkratzer or something who do scored versions of stuff like Whitehouse. Bit redundant really.

In this extensive anthology, Mark Fell, a pioneering artist known for his sound installations and his musical work solo and as part of SND and Sensate Focus, assembles a collection of diverse materials charting his defiantly unorthodox thinking on time, structure, technology, and the relation between academic and popular electronic music.

An amalgam of workbook and manifesto, featuring a collection of interleaved statements, diagrammatic scores, and instructional texts, Structure and Synthesis is a direct engagement with Fell’s original thinking and his continual provocations in regard to ‘experimental’ music. Alongside reflections on theory and practice, the volume includes exercises for dismantling musical expertise, habits, and intuitions, documenting Fell’s explorations of the peripheries of rhythm, shape and time in perception and performance.

Long-term collaborator designer Joe Gilmore provides a striking graphic context for Fell’s evolving thinking and the methods and structures he has developed through his solo and collaborative work.
