Fish

My sister goes swimming on the Wye. Luckily the only thing I have to contend with on most parts of the Middle Severn are canoes. I went canoeing from Bridgnorth to near Bewdley myself and found it boring and hard work. Sometimes at Stourport a boat will come past and you think you're tackle is going to get washed away with the bow waves.

If my brothers turns up or get together, chances are they‘re going to get their phones out and start scrolling through images of various catches and landings, exactly like that pose.

“This is a chub. This is a pike. This is a barbel. This is a roach. This is a ........”

I'm the same but usually go fishing on my own so just photograph the fish. I took my brother fishing for the first time last year just before lockdown and had to get a pic of him with his first 'decent sized' Carp.

That’s the hammer.

Crab-lining around Ynys Mon, Porthmadog or Skegness used to be fun as a nipper. Line with a hook, bit of bread, dropped off a harbour wall. Pull them up slowly into your bucket of sea water. Then return them when you got bored.

Rock pooling was even more fun. A net, a bucket and masses of different species. Put them all back when done, hippy parents making you note which was which.

I catch Crayfish quite often on some lakes, they're not too much bother but I've heard the Tidal Trent had an invasion of Mitten Crabs last year, they were biting through anglers line.

Rarely Spotted Deep Sea Pacific Football Fish Washes Ashore

It's a type of "angler fish" - a very odd creature - from the article:

The fish discovered Friday is known to be a female, because only female angler fish possess a long stalk on their head with a bioluminescent tip, which is used to lure prey in the darkness. Angler fish also have razor sharp teeth like "pointed shards of glass" and their mouths are large enough that they can swallow prey as big as their own bodies.

Females are known to grow up to 24 inches long, but male angler fish usually only grow to be about an inch long because "their sole purpose is to find a female and help her reproduce [...]Males latch onto the female with their teeth and become 'sexual parasites,' eventually coalescing with the female until nothing is left of their form but their testes for reproduction."

I know nothing about fishing, but one time we got chatting to a taxi driver and he told us about how he liked to hunt cuttlefish and squid and little octopuses too... I think he used to dive in a suit with scuba stuff and then stab em with a spear before taking them home for the grill or you can fry them if you like, either in batter or naked. I can't remember the details but he was really into it and he spoke quite enthusiastically - it was pretty interesting, certainly made a change from asking if I preferred Benfica or Sporting or whether I had been to Bairro Alto yet.

in the thread talking about sagres and super bock i considered asserting that the portugese like these beers because they are very proud of their domestic produce.

an idea i have based on a time i went out for dinner with a portugese man who was very proud indeed of the food on offer in his village, it was his only topic of conversation

as a result of which i ate cuttlefish for the first, and last, time in my life

i was brought a strange white blob with a mess of tentacles on one end. i cut into it and ate a piece of rubbery stuff and it immediately started to ooze black ink. the more i ate the more ink it exuded until i was left with a plate swamped in this think black gunk

They are proud of their produce, most of it justifiably so though. They will bring out some prawns and go "check this out" and you will be like yeah this is fucking good. Maybe they will serve some green wine with it too and you'll be like "Two minutes ago I didn't even know what green wine was but now I know what it is and I like it and it goes really well with seafood, wow" and then perhaps some red wine from the Dao region or even from Alantejo if you're lucky... and you will enjoy that too and so on. And then maybe after dinner you go to a bar and you have some Sagres and after one mouthful you will throw up everything you have eaten... no, that is obviously a gross exaggeration, it's just a very bland fizzy beer but it always surprises met that, given the above, they don't have one that is really great.

But was it nice? Normally in and around Lisbon they tend to do it cut into strips and then battered, it's quite tasty if it's done well but it's not the most exciting dish in the world. I have also had it just sort of like they do with octopus. Never had it in its ink though I thought that was more of a delicacy though.
