Cities also - I used to dream of going to New York, because I was a hip-hopping back-packing kinda guy

Used to be Japan, could have called me a Japanophile for a while. Germany, particularly Berlin and Munich. France to a lesser extent. And of course the Midwest, Detroit and Chicago.

Never been to South America but always dreamt of going to Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Santiago, Lima, Bogota. When I was growing up, Caracas seemed like a wild place.

someone here lived in Sao Paulo for awhile...was it @pattycakes_ ?

ive always been interested in why people are drawn to this or that exotic place/culture. what makes sufi a Magrheb guy or woops a Francophile. why is Rudewhy so passionate about The Netherlands why is John Eden a Rastaman.

I really like that East meets West bit of Turkey, Georgia, Armenia... maybe Azerbaijan etc Well I like the idea of all those things, I've never been anywhere near there. But particularly Georgian wine (the claim to have invented it) and lamb and the mixture of Soviet modernist buildings with more traditional architecture in Tbilisi, Turkish food and buildings and music etc
Armenia and Georgia were the first two Christian countries and they have the unusual orthodox churches that look almost like mosques, I have a friend who used to work painting icons for them. So yeah thsee countries that are neither Europe or Asia (or kinda both in Turkey's case maybe?) where Christianity meets Islam and so on. Sounds good.

Soviet Russia. Watched a few documentaries on Romania and Ceausescu and it seems they had a bit of a North Korea type regime going on for a while. I've 'gone off' a lot of countries from having watching too many art house films so fairly narrow in what I like. Got a photography book on Barcelona by Rod Modell so you could say it's one place I like. Not as much as my Detroit at Night photography book though.

Ainori: Love Wagon on Netflix made parts of Kazakhstan look gorgeous but I would struggle there for many reasons.

In general I'm not really fussed about travel: all the big things you're meant to want to see like the Grand Canyon or the pyramids or whatever: you can see them on Google Maps. There's loads of interesting stuff and fascinating people and things to do right on my doorstep that I barely have time to enjoy, I don't need to travel the world to explore.

I get that up to a point. I think that I really wanted to know London properly, I lived there, well, approaching twenty years and I was beginning to feel that I knew it well. And that made me conscious that if I went to Lima or whatever for a week I wouldn't "know" it at all in the same way. Now I feel that I'm starting to get to grips with Lisbon a bit.
But I definitely want to travel, being on the continent and having a car there is no excuse - but I will very much be aware of and accepting of the fact that there is a two-tier (or more) system of places that I "know" - London, Lisbon, maybe others from growing up - and those I've just visited as a tourist or (if I have a friends there) a small step up from that.

I think part of it is just that I'm more interested in people and their stories than places and their history, and it sounds silly but I do think everyone is interesting, even if I don't like them. I love hearing people talk about stuff that excites them even if I have zero interest in the topic because I think anyone can become captivating if they have an audience. Whereas, once you've seen a landscape and had a moment to enjoy it, that's it, my attention doesn't really linger. The things I like about beaches and ruins etc is the sense of calmness but if I could get that easier then I would never need to go anywhere, really.

This isn't so much about where you'd like to go on holiday as cultures you are or have been interested in or obsessed by.

I've always had a thing about rainforests, but that isn't specific to any particular country. It's just any rainforest.
