i dunno, life without electronics sounds pretty ok to me these days
it feels wrong that we have forgotten how to do without all this crap
There's a power cord on your computer broski. You can watch some YT videos on how to iron the old-fashioned way, then delete yr account and never go back.

It's funny most of the quotes I've posted come from ebooks. Even when I have a hard copy of a book now I prefer ebooks.

I've always wanted to read that. I've read a few other Jim Thompson novels, the killer inside me, grifters. I like how he always describes cooking really well. The killer inside me has this long description of him cooking ham and eggs which sounds very appealing to me. Even though I don't quite understand what he means by cooking the ham.

woops

is not like other people
@DLaurent there's a film of Betty Blue which is my favourite. make sure you get the 3 hour version though. as for robbe-grillet all his characters dress like that

Like gammon maybe? Would like to read him, I remember quite enjoying the film of that but thinking the book would be better.

The recent winterbottom film? Yeah I thought it was ok but the books miles better. Cos the twist is set up really well. I suppose it could be gammon. That would make sense.

There's also a great line which I think they used in the film, about how it's darkest just before it gets light.

Cant remember. Here's an ode to smoking from the Fred vermorel book I read in about 2 days, his bio of Vivienne Westwood. Highly recommended (s/o John and Martin for the recc)

If you like Jim Thompson I highly recommend the film Serie Noire. I've just realised Perec had a hand in it too but it's nothing like anything else by Perec I've heard about.

Hope you enjoy it. It's quite funny I think. I should watch other films with the lead actor. But equally dark as you'd expect from Thompson.

Chris Marker - Coreennes

Tell me more about this film.

It's a classic caper film. Don't expect a fully serious crime film. The acting is stupendous. There's not much I can really compare it to as it's like nothing else I've seen from France and at the same time I wouldn't expect a film like that to get made elsewhere, maybe an Alan Clarke film like Rita, Sue and Bob Too, something like that combined with... I dunno, it's not really a Noir except in the offbeat way of Jim Thompson. I have Patrick Dewaere down as a comic actor but haven't seen anything else with him.

I know that name... I thought, but when I looked at pictures of his face it didn't ring a bell. I'm not very good at recognising people at the best of time though.

I just watched it, it's really good. Lots of comic almost Charlie Chaplin style acting, especially the opening scene.

But also later as well, there's a great scene where he tears a room apart.

Some good eating and drinking scenes.

A nearly mute female lead.

Lots of scenes in the bathroom as well.

Doesn't reach any depth but there's something about it.

It's the same guy who is in les valseuses ("going places") which I used go love.

It feels offbeat to watch it now, but totally normal at the time? Also had me thinking about how Jim Thompson is good cos he uses so many specifics and all the details really matter, people's jobs, minor characters etc.

And also how this kind of novel would not be written now, nor would a film be made of it, as we are so cashless.
