Another question is, what music is there that predates reggae and dub that is most true to its spirit? 🤔
ooh. i like!

luke's example of sun ra is good

also

and this (which I actually had to rip and upload!!!) - this is 1000% Reggae and makes the Jazz/Reggae affiliation very clear

Bob Marley said reggae started with Fats Domino.

I put a lot of the echo and bleep sounds down to the Tree Frogs you find in Jamaica but could have just made that up.

Other than that the lineage is mento music combined with southern jazz, latin claves, and african drumming.

there's a lot more to Jamaica and reggae than bass grounation dub etc

there's love songs, raunchy songs, social comment songs, novelty songs

so in a way this is in touch with a spirit of Jamaica

yeah they do everything but if you say oh they do everything it makes 'the spirit of jamacia' impossible to pin down.

in terms of space and echo and the feeling of a presence through absence i think this stuff comes close. jamaican vocal groups like the mighty diamonds and early wailers took a ton from doo wop and r&b also ofc.

i am a huge reggae fan and these are two of the most beautiful songs every recorded imo so take that as you will.
