Most true to the spirit of Reggae/Dub Reggae and NOT from Jamaica

When Sublime first came along, I loathed them - but then I was living in New York, it made no sense at all.

Now I'm in Southern California.... hearing it on the radio, it sound just right

Nothing to do with "bass weight" and that side of things, this is about reggae as an art of singing - and this dead dude got closer than most white dudes to the "throwing off the surly bonds of gravity" floaty unfettered free feeling ("treble light"?)

Nice use of the McLaren war whoop from the start of "Buffalo Gals" too

With the Ruts you would think "Babylon's Burning" or even "Staring at the Rude Boys" would be the obvious punk reggae moments, but I think this tune assimilates reggae into rock in a much more potent and fully alloyed way (talk about "bass weight")

Certainly much better than their actual overt attempts to do punk-reggae ("Jah War", yeucch), snoozy dub albums (Ruts DC Presents Rhythm Collision) etc etc

one of the most surprising - and lovely - migrations of dub technique into English pop starts at about 1.30 in and recurs full strength later into the song as well

I'd say it was dub via A.R.Kane if it wasn't for the next tune

23 Skidoo - Language ( 12" B side )

Industrial dub - with Sketch from UK Jazz Funk outfit Linx on bass and vocals

The cover is worth posting - more than a nod to Barney Bubbles from Neville Brody here:

Imagination - Music and Lights ( from the "Night Dubbing" LP )

Brit Funk boy band Imagination were a regular feature on Top of the Pops at the start of the 80s, always making an impression with their unique fashion sense and choreography - in 1983 they released "Night Dubbing", an album of dub mixes of some of their greatest hits. It ended up at number 9 in the UK album charts, which may be the highest position a dub album has ever reached?

Marvel at this performance of the original hit

Goth Dub!

The first few minutes are full of Lee Perry style percussive effects, brooding bassline, scratchy guitar, well dread

Dub is nothing to be scared of...

Probably mentioned this before but it's a great one off seven from a bunch of Swiss students that ought to fit the bill.

Actually not a one-off at all cos it came with another seven inch come to think of it, but that's not so good. I forget how it sounds.
