that may be true, but swift really hasn't done country in ages, has she? pretty much pure top-40 pop for years.
Oh I didn't mean that in reference to Taylor Swift, sorry. I actually forgot she was originally a country musician herself. Country is just one of the prime examples to me of both white american culture and immaturity

I do have respect for these older musicians, but it's gone pretty downhill recently, right? I'm not very aware of the current scene, but I'm occasionally forced to hear it through loudspeakers in public etc.
My guess is that it's more about country mainstreaming as a pop styling/brand, but IDK anything

like all music genres, I'm guessing country has a slick commercial contingent that @matchstickwitch is talking about but also a more indie/underground element who keep it real. but I haven't paid attention to C&W in ages, so I don't know for sure either.

the outlaw sound (Waylon, Willie) was originally a breakaway reaction to the slick direction country was going. then of course they became huge in themselves.
