Feats of Autism

There is an Autism thread (by Nomadologist) but I think this is different

There are few marvelous examples which I found here https://www.discogs.com/lists/Edge-Cases/23195

This one really is a majestic sight to behold

and here's another record one - also fantastic

but there are surely many other wonderful examples in different fields which can be celebrated.

I defy anyone, no matter where there sympathies may lie politically, not to find the antics of LaBeouf, Rönkkö & Turner's antagonists here hilarious: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LaBeouf,_Rönkkö_&_Turner#HEWILLNOTDIVIDE.US,_2017_–_2021

On March 8, 2017, the stream resumed from an "unknown location", with the artists announcing that a flag emblazoned with the words "He Will Not Divide Us" would be flown for the duration of the presidency.[73] The camera was pointed up at the flag, set against a backdrop of nothing but sky. Reporting on the move, Nylon reflected that "in tumultuous times like these, it's encouraging to see that art finds a way to exist and artists find a way to create, even when their work and message are under attack."[73] Within 38 hours of resuming transmission, the flag was located by a collaboration of 4chan users, who used airplane contrails, flight tracking, celestial navigation, and other techniques to determine that it was located in Greeneville, Tennessee.[74][75][unreliable source?] In the early hours of March 10, 2017, after approaching the camera and blaring their vehicle's horn to verify that the location was correct and waiting until the evening,[75][unreliable source?] a 4chan user took down and stole the flag, replacing it with a red 'Make America Great Again' hat and a Pepe the Frog shirt.[76][77] These were later removed, and the stream continued broadcasting an empty flag pole.[78] Following escalating threats coordinated via 4chan and 8chan, and after a field at the location was set on fire, the artists were again forced to relocate the project.[77]

On March 22, 2017, the stream resumed, depicting a new "He Will Not Divide Us" flag being flown on the roof of the Foundation for Art and Creative Technology (FACT) in Liverpool, England.[77] Commenting on the new location, the trio stated that “events have shown that America is simply not safe enough for this artwork to exist.”[77] On the next day, individuals gained access to the roof of the five-story building, and on police advice, FACT and the artists removed the installation "due to dangerous, illegal trespassing."[79][80][61] On October 16, 2017, Le Lieu unique in Nantes, France, adopted the project, with the flag flying at the top of the landmark building's tower.[81] In the early hours of October 25, 2017, vandals unsuccessfully attempted to set fire to the flag using a flaming drone, before crashing the remotely-piloted aircraft.[82]

The feat of analysis needed to find the location of the first flag from the position of passing plane took a certain level of focus and skill that's not widely available.

Autism is not synonymous with either analytic genius or single-mindedness, you know. It's a disorder, not a superpower.

It was a blatantly dickheaded thing to say. You could, of course, take it back. But that would require a modicum of self-awareness and humility, so I won't hold my breath.

ah come on dear, fluffy, cuddly @Mr. Tea ! you are being a little one-sided here.

in the grand old days if someone was on the spectrum the family would organise for that person to wind up in engineering.

my delightful father-in-law is a retired brain surgeon who has only recently been diagnosed with aspergers (it has always been completely obvious)

it's actually very like the "spritually-awakend" / vs / "bi-polar disorder" conundrum - it's obviously a little bit of both! it makes no sense to regard these things as either entirely negative or positive.

just because greta thunberg says it doesn't mean it's completely wrong...

Right, but again, you're assuming everyone with autism is high-functioning, which is not the case. At the other end of the spectrum, there's the brother of a friend of mine, who's non-verbal and lives in sheltered accommodation.

So it's odd that you're saying I'm being "one-sided", since I am indeed aware that it covers a very wide spectrum of abilities and behaviour types.

what @Mr. Tea said and also all these are dressed up as positives. "Being precise and detail orientated" could be a nice way of putting "too precise for normal people and comes across as a weirdo", "Able to concentrate for long periods of time when motivated" has the flipside "finds it impossible to concentrate or bother at all when not motivated", etc etc
