Going through the back cat. atm. Anyone got any particular favourites or stuff they really can't stand? I'm talking from inception to the late 90s, I guess, as I doubt anyone here kept up with them beyond that.

I'd never heard the Hidden Agenda stuff before and was taken aback by how jazzy it was. It's impressive, but can't say it does much for me. It's like muzak with breaks or something. Lounge music.

Got Peshay's first thing for them on atm - Psychosis / Represent. 'Psychosis' is the better of the two, but meh. Also noticed one of our own in the comments on Discogs.

referencing Psychosis / Represent, 12", MET 002

Tracks from early 1995, and in so far also very typical for that era, when "artcore" arrived and got media coverage. At the same time tho, ragga jungle still ruled the dancefloors very much. nice drum programming, and some jazzy vibes for quieter moments.

Weird hearing all this smooth, jazzy stuff after associating them with 'Stonekiller', 'Metropolis', 'The Angels Fell' etc for so long.

The first Alex Reece 12" and all the 'Basic Principles' remixes are really bland, imo. Other than the Wax Doctor thing, I don't think I'm really into anything until Doc Scott pops up with 'It's Yours'.

I like pretty much everything up to about 1999/2000. They're all superb. But Rufige Kru - Beachdrifta (METH 037) is the end of my complete run. After that they got increasingly less essential and I only buy them very occasionally now. The last one I got was Fanu - Black Label EP (METHPLA 028) in 2018.

Here's one favourite:

Here's one favourite:

I've got the first J. Majik 12" on atm, Your Sound / Tranquil. Def. one of the stronger early ones. I'm struck by how slow this stuff is though. I keep wanting it to move a bit faster, hit a bit harder.

Did you hear the album he did a couple of years ago?

Yeah, it all got faster and faster 🤖. Old school dnb is a completely different genre really.

It feels like a bit of a lull between hardcore and the later stuff. The first one I've noticed's a bit faster is Photek - Consciousness.

I like Alex Reece’s own rmx of Basic Principles. It’s quite unique, sort of sui generis in a way. Same with Repertoire by J Majik.
Was also a big fan of Optical’s Shape the Future rmx on the metal box compilation. That’s more or less when I stopped listening to drum n bass tho.

I'll have to point you towards Simon's Energy Flash where he says it was the most exciting music on the planet :)

Read something last night about Alex Reece getting beaten up by Goldie, dunno how much truth there is to it.

did you know the only reason why alex reece flopped after this track was because he fell out with goldie? goldie saw his arse with alex over the fact that alex, got a record deal with 4th and broadway so he withheld the royalties alex was supposed to earn from pulp fiction. he confronted goldie over this little incident, got beaten up and blacklisted because goldie did everything in his power to make sure alex couldn't promote his so far EP on dnb radio's or clubs, so alex's album never saw the light of day!

I dunno if the listings are accurate on Discogs, but 'The Angels Fell' is probably the first tune I really rate, although I do like that first J. Majik 12" and 'It's Yours' off the Doc Scott thing.

Yeah the story was that it happened on the dance floor at Speed. Was about royalties for Pulp Fiction I think.

The album did come out and the reason it flopped was cos it was shit. Really fucking weak, and I like Alex Reece a lot. Some of the tracks were played by Grooverider and Fabio so it wasn’t boycotted but really most of the album wasn’t good enough to play out.

Edit: this was meant to quote Version in the reply but I fucked it up.
