Dissensus Raw: The Compilation - A Thread

I've no idea why, out of all the examples of someone just making it in the nick of time that were available to me in the history of literature, film etc I chose to pick Phileas Fogg. Especially cos come to think of it, doesn't he think he's late but in fact he has actually arrived a day early or something cos he's gained a day by going round the world. That is definitely not gonna to me, it was a really bad example.

@soul_pill @pattycakes_ - this bit about leaving a few dB of "headroom": will it be intuitively obvious what that means if I play my tune in Ableton with a plugin such as VST enabled?
Leaving some room , not topping out in the red level -wise , allows the Mastering process space to operate.
What you WILL hear is the difference between 'before' and 'after' as Mastering is the final part of process of making things sound like proper releases.
Thanks again Soul Pill !!

four on floor jungle, also inspired by tracks from my hero eon like "fear, the mindkiller" and "basket case"

i know it's about twice the recommended length, but the thing is, taking patty's advice added about 20 seconds, so it's all his fault...

(submitting the final mix later tonight, unless for some reason anyone objects to it being on the comp, lol)
Hear you on Eon ...
Sweet ... Void Dweller - this will fit right in ( and same time, stand out )

Rest assured that in the history of bad examples, it pales into insignificance next to @john eden saying most people supported Trump or still think Brexit was a great idea.

Dumb question, but when you say 'send over pre-masters'... do you mean send the multiple stems of the track, or a single flattened file?

Just sent the first 4 pieces to @soul_pill

Oh yeah, and for everyone involved, it's probably already obvious, but you don't need to post your track in here, you can pm it and then it will be revealed at the listening party on the 26th.

Speaking of which, is everyone going to be free around 5pm GMT? @polystyle suggested it as a good time for balance between all our time zones, as he'll be 8 hours behind in LA. East coast US it'll be midday. Here in Berlin 6pm. Seems reasonable to me.

Thinking it would be nice to have it set up so there's a chatroom or some kind of live interaction possible while we listen. Anyone have any ideas about that? Zoom? Twitch? Never done anything like that before but it could be good fun

why not a thread as we've done with thirdform and woebot mixes last year? keeps it simple

Shit, this is really annoying and embarrassing. I had a VST called Voxengo Span installed a few years ago, and all hooked up with Ableton and working nicely, but like a total tool I must have uninstalled it. It's free to use, so that's not the problem, but I've just downloaded it again and realised I have to clue how to make it work. Install it, fine. Open Ableton. Then what? It's not listed under plugins and I have no idea what to do next.

Could anyone take me through how to install this, or any equivalent free plugin that'll show me the levels of the individual tracks in my tune? Thanks in advance.

It's a good idea to learn about 'gain staging' in the DAW. There's countless tutorials on YouTube. Find one 5-10min long with plenty of views and soon you'll understand the difference between the analog and digital domain. -18db is a significant number, especially if you're using analog emulation plugins like compressors and distortions. It's a bit of a head scratcher at first but just go with it and then see the difference in your final mixdowns

This is like literal "jungle techno". I like the rooted sound.

3-4min length was just an idea from me, not recommendation!
