Adverts Music

Arguably the highest achievement of western society,
A lot of tunes get seconded to advertisements, though i guess authors can prevent that if they choose,
(I'm certain that you will be able to think of tunes written with the ads $$$ in mind - whether consciously/openly or not)

and there are tunes that have come back to great popularity, been brough to mass attention, or changed their nature completely by being used in ads,

the most concentrated form of musical ads is the jingle - i suppose that not every tune can be boiled down to a coherent and catchy sequence of 1/2 dozen notes so there must be some special magic there

there was a huge stink about 20 years ago when Moby licensed every track on his "Play" album to TV commercials.

love when ad agencies slip in fucked up selections for the unaware public: Iggy's "lust for life" in a Carnival Cruise lines spot (edited before the "liquor and drugs" and "hypnotizing chickens" lines).

or Volkswagen using Psychic TV's "Roman P".

Iggy's passenger has come up recently, i think
Queen's radio gaga is currently a bbc ad

i guess the full effect is when the musician warps the very culture in which they exist to such an extent that what started out as a shocking rebel sound becomes advert fodder

"Theme" by PiL was allegedly used by British Airways in the early '80s in a scrapped advert, but I've never seen any of evidence of this.

I remember hearing 'Nervous Breakdown' by Black Flag in a mobile ad some time in the 2000s, and am sure 'Where Eagles Dare' by the Misfits (minus the chorus) cropped up in something else.

Apparently Desmond Dekker got pissed off at some UK festival when the crowd started singing 'Vitalite' back at him. Again, I have no clue if that's true or if the person who told me that just thought it was a good story. Also remember Gregory Isaacs' 'Night Nurse' being used to advertise, erm, Night Nurse, if that's still around.

Coil recorded a bunch of ad jingles that somehow managed to be more disturbing than their rejected 'Hellraiser' themes.

Surely the best ad music ever was the fist-pumping "WOOOAHHH...BODY-FOR-HORM...."

According to Chris Carter's discography on his webpage, in addition to being in Throbbing Gristle,CTI, etc., he lists:

"SCHICK RAZORS Theme written by Chris Carter for French cinema & TV ad campaign. Released 1981"

Unfortunately I can't find it on youtube.... I'd read somewhere that he's done other jingles as a way to make money...
