There's an intense self consciousness to English people. I'm obviously quite an extreme example of this but I think it pervades our culture and explains our obsession with and paranoia over irony and pisstaking. Discipline, you mentioned, and that might be a root of it. The fear of rising, even accidentally, above or below one's station. A self regulatory instinct that also might explain the English relationship with booze.

its obviously a kind of valve isnt it. a self-regulatory compensation for some intolerable pressure

I've probably told this "story" before but I remember being in Thailand as an 18 year old and spending a few days in a jungle with a largely continental European group, then going to an island and for the first time in a few days being surrounded by English people - and detecting a constant tone of irony and snark that wasn't there with the continentals. This sort of constant game of one upping each other and not being caught out.

It was instructive. I can see why you get these great authors who are exiles, who live most of their lives away from their country of birth but still spend most of their time writing about it. In a sense you can't see your culture up close, only from a distance.

Booze is miraculous for the repressed mind, it feels like throwing off a straight jacket. Which leads to bending over in a public square with a firework up your bum.

can you stop pretending not to be english please

Had 20£ on Italy at 8-1, so took my son and his mates out for a munch (160£ + 20£ is a year’s wages here)

Difference with Scotland and Wales is neither expected to get beyond, at the most, a semi-final place. England actually played football for once, went all the way, but with that success comes your innate hubris (over many layers of irony, ie it’s not coming home and we all know it)

As you articulated, sprinkle with booze and gak, give it a good stir and plop. Lose to Italy. On penalties. This shit writes itself

I’ve accepted assimilation, made peace with it, but as the man says
nations are difficult because we dont like the people we share them with. as i say i dont think in terms of pride/shame in my country but i do think about what it is about england that turns out the specimens it produces. what forces make these particular varieties of sausage

The mould-maker - cultural processes registered by the relationship between individuals and social norms. Class. The weather. Class. The weather. Envy about the balls on olive oil making nations. Magpie modes of appropriation. Existential dread about aspiration (that olde chestnut because = class)). The war. Lost empire where the weather’s better in the paces that said gtfo. Dogging and the friction (I had to) between desire and sexual openness. London/the rest complex. Twatting loafs of drugs although Scottish drug deaths trump every cunt (we win at one thing). Archaic law

Complex, porous, hybrid, capable, but history’s ghosts still haunt the machine
