This has the more muscular ambition of post 97 dnb but still has something, a more successful hybrid of rnb and techy Chicago ambience with jungle. A space which instantly calcified when fabio and them forced an ugly brand around it. “Liquid”. Blugh. The word applied as a genre sounds awful, slimey, putrid almost. Jungle is a tree of dead branches, like an almost beautiful but badly tended garden, yeah it’s frustrating.
Like this a lot. It kickstarted a 6 month trend of half decent unofficial dnb remixes of rnb tracks eg this, which isn’t bad

My friend's radio show was her joining the dots between this sort of Lovers Rock/Smooth R&B Jungle, Happy Hardcore and Rave stuff that i thought worked quite nicely.

I found the absolute perfect example of this style on the flip of a 94/95 record, early Roots Manuva production, seems to be in a few different styles, but mostly Lovers Rock/UK Street Soul/Soca/Jungle, he does a verse at the end that just sounds like something he could have done on his first album.

Listening to the mix of page 1 in the baking sun yesterday, I found myself thinking about how this really is the "Street soul" of a decade later.

Also how the combo of ethereal feminine vocal and muscular hollow beats never sounded so good. They are not really in opposition to one another, more like they complement one another, despite each being the max of itself. It made me think about about male-female as a binary opposition is such a flawed concept.

And some of the beats are so simple and sublime. As though when tech affords a new sound, and you jump on it, there's so much more of the person in a way, cos the tech is so young and nothing is standardised.

Some of the best tunes on here have this almost identikit approach:

-ethereal feminine vocal, check
-ruff neck ragga MC, check
-iconic sample, check
-tumping b line, check

Like they have literally just grabbed a bit of each, from what could be heard on a walk through the city, and collaged it together. Great stuff.

A lot of the stuff in this thread is too rough to be lovers jungle. too tight, not loose enough. It's more euphoric, lustful and palliative. More to do with immediate desire than longing.

You do have to go close to Bukem territory for lovers jungle.

Invisible man did it perfectly in '94

A kind of delicate minimalism. deep house, but more melancholic, pure emotion bomb on the dancefloor, nice and easy. nice and easy is what lovers jungle is fundamentally, 6 AM biz.

In fact it helps if the breaks are not too chopped up, swing but no riotous clutter.
