I know, it was a sad story. That film is his testament, though. It is a masterpiece.

One of the great things about digital TV has been the proliferation of channels showing old shit that hasn't been screened for years, like the film version of Blue Thunder (see above).

The British made a lot of good films before the 1970s but they were never naturals at it like Americans or the Italians. That meant that the really good British stuff often seemed accidental or actually freakish like the Powell and Pressburger films.

They were still a lot better at it than the French, though.

It does stand out as a British film, I was surprised that it was so tough and real and compared favourably to US films of the same era. Didn't know there were UK disaster films that felt more like noirs.... and that they were good.
