Rolling Archaeology Thread

Beast of Burden
I, briefly, was an archeologist when I was a child. I'm going to bed now, but I'll tell you the story some time tomorrow.

Poorly understood cultural horizon plus the eternal what is art? Think materials, practices, effects. Lots of rock art across prehistory in Scandinavia, not too far away. To the west in Ireland you get Ogham stonework contemporary to any “Pict” horizon. I think it’s a hybrid culture containing aspects of British, Irish and Scandi. In the same way languages shift through migration, so do ideas of expression. Celtic, in this sense, is a lazy term

Populations moved either side of the Roman conquest. You get a truly heterogeneous British Isles in the Iron Age, all the way back to the first human activity. Balkan hunter gatherers, Anatolian farmers, Crimean Bronze Age blonds, wandering Greek tin merchants, Iberian and Germanic iron wealth, followed by mass movement when the Romans left. Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Norman French, new world influx, slavery, colonialism. Spaghettification of genes, cultures, languages

Take the flags away and archaeology can bridge certain biases

'Etenwerke', if you're David Jones.

Did a lot of shagging too. Croatians, Middle Eastern troops at Slack Fort, Hispanic legions. Veterans intermarrying, settling down. Vindolanda tablets with wives complaining they couldn’t get decent wine for birthday parties. Curse tablets from Bath “kill those that stole my favourite cloak”. It’s the flow of names that emerges that punches through - Verica, Mandubracius, Cartimandua - and so many different gods you wonder how anyone got dressed without hours of blessings

Neil Oliver’s demise has been fun. Always a pillock, any sense of shame has entirely abandoned ship, along with hair product endorsements and whatever else you consider self respect

Someone you’d have to stare down in person. Imagine him getting all free speech, gesticulating, “blah how things cem ti beee” and he accidentally brushes your arm. Just go full Green Brigade on the cunt. He’s lying on the pavement, quivering, hair all fucked up like Russell Brand’s, another pestilent preening agent of Satan. “Shush, Neil, shush”.

actually never wondered what faience was though :)
there's a lot of old glass in the river, also down at the poets' office by the thames, it gets a lovely iridescence after a few years

Have you heard of faience? It’s the intersection between clay and glass

Not Thames provenance obviously. A striking display of blue from the south east Mediterranean, when it ages and the surface patina degrades it can look like copper oxide
