I've read articles about how being in an EVE Online "guild" ( or whatever they call them ) is like a full time job - maintaining spreadsheets, etc.,

Oh I mean the module can't seem to progress past a certain slide, tried turning adblock to see if that would help but alas it did not.

stick with it - choose "copycat" to start with, if the miscommunication level > 9% then go with "cheat"

it's actually a really good guide to Game Theory
This is cool. It's kinda like a demonstration of game theory rather than an explanation.... but it gets really complicated really quickly once you try and generalise.

How You Play Spades Is How You Play Life

Spades in the African-American Community

In many ways, Spades is a metaphor for African-American life. How you play Spades, is how you play life. When playing Spades, you're dealt a hand and have no control over the cards you get - unless you're cheating.

I've no idea how to play "Spades" and this article didn't leave me any the wiser, but that's not really the point of the piece, it's more about its place in African-American society and how it can strengthen black identity. Really annoying layout though, I thought people realised by now that side scrolling on webpages is just bad design.

experience of Philadelphia was people really liked to play card games, sunday especially with the football on and grub readying - pisstake lush food, even onion dip. hoagies seasoned with rosemary and oregano or sausage and peppers you can't go wrong

computer games were around but throw a little change in the kitty and people'd go wild, epitome of fun smashed on bourbon

ex's Mom-mom was mid 80's placing bets on football, she even bet on something with multiple bookies on christmas day, add this loud hybrid German/Irish/Italian clan of women who all called you hun, proud of being hammered as fuck at the Eagles and passing out on the metro. not "firm" rowdy but dedicated to alcohol. i can't believe how smashed they would have been for their SB win

Games about games

this seems the best place to post this, as it is about games people are playing to manipulate the retro game collecting market ( allegedly )

Exposing FRAUD And DECEPTION In The Retro Video Game Market

this video has caused quite a stir within the retro game collecting world - it's an easy one to all asleep to due to the guy's monotone voice, so here's a quick rundown to save you the bother - also I wouldn't be surprised if lawyers end up getting it removed due to the allegations he makes

you may have seen some stories about a sealed Super Mario game selling for $1 million - it turns out there is one company that "grades" games ( this seems to be a case of someone pays them money to grade an unopened game, they give the box a rating like 9.8 A++ ), then the game goes on a particular auction site, the owners of that auction site will buy it for a stupid amount, the sale will make it into the press which generates publicity, people think games are worth money and start buying them at stupid amounts for investment purposes - there's allegedly one grading company and, allegedly, one auction house involved in the alleged scam, both involved in manipulating the market to generate huge profits for themselves ( members of the two companies have been buying up sealed retro games for the last two years in order to offload them once the market reaches fever pitch )

Yes! And this is exactly the turf where concepts like "hyperstition" are more significant—systems of positive feedback loops where perceived public interest leads to real public interest, so if you manage the first part, you're golden.

The difficult part is breaking inertia, giving the meme a kick-start. But once it picks up momentum, this momentum builds via the positive feedback loops of a Matthew Effect. The meme goes “viral.” This is known as runaway selection, and it can come at the cost of an organism’s non-sexual fitness. That is, in optimizing for some intra-species game, it becomes less optimized for the inter-species game. Which, of course, is the opposite of how these things are “supposed” to work.

the setup was quite clever - get the CEO of the grading company onto "pawn stars" as an evaluation expert, he'll give a retro game a hugely inflated estimate of its worth, say some crap like "a slice of history, memories are made of this", etc., plant a few articles in the press, and then the public who just didn't care before start thinking that retro games are valuable

It's happening already - I saw a video of one of the "real" collectors complaining that he had gone to a garage sale, asked "any games?" and the woman said "oh, someone bought them all up - I've heard they are valuable nowadays"..
